DD> Well, sort of. The Bulldog was produced by Bates and Edmonds, of
DD> Lansing, Michigan, and sold by Fairbanks Company. Unless you mean the
DD> The Lanz Bulldog which was built in Mannheim, Germany from 1921 to
 DD> about 1960.
DD> The pictures of the Bates and Edmonds Bulldog engine and the engines
DD> mounted on the Lanz Bulldog tractors are quite similar. The B&E Bulldog
DD> engine pictured was mounted on a seemingly smaller version of the
DD> tractor shown in the Lanz article
DD> reliable. The very early ones had no reverse gear; to go
DD> backward the driver paused momentarily and then spun the engine in the
DD> other direction. Even those built after the war had engines which would
DD> run in either DD> direction.

GJ> There are still a few around in museums. They were often used as
GJ> mobile stationary engines to power pumps and sheep shearing stands,
GJ> where they would run all day, slowly vibrating themselves into the
GJ> ground as they oscillated in response to the piston inertia. That is
GJ> also where lanoline was often used as a fuel. Although power
GJ> kerosene was the intended fuel, old oil was quite successful. It was

DD> I have seen a number of the versions sold by Fairbanks at "Old
DD> Thresher's Reunions" and antique tractor shows. Most ran on some
DD> version of kerosene or coal oil. (Coal oil is obtained from the
DD> destructive distillation of cannel coal, mineral wax, and bituminous
DD> shale, while kerosene is obtained by the distillation of petroleum. A
DD> special type of coal known as cannel coal (classified also as
DD> terrestrial type of oil shale) is required to produce it.) The end

An interesting word, "cannel", being a corruption of "candle", as that
coal burns with a bright, white flame. It is also sometimes used to
describe an oil-rich nut which burns brightly. Known in Indonesia as
"kemiri", the candle nut is similar to the Australian macadamia.

DD> products are quite similar and in the Midwestern part of the United
DD> States often used interchangeably by crusty old farts who grew up
DD> before electricity was commonly available to rural areas.

While the coastal COFs used whale oil in their lanterns...

DD> When I first heard one of these horizontal cylinder, water reservoir
DD> cooled engines run I realised where James Thurber got the "pocketa
DD> pocketa pocketa" sound he used in his famous short story "The Secret
 DD> Life of Walter Mitty".

Yup! A comforting, relaxed, agricultural sound.

GJ> Sad to hear that White have faded from the scene. As you may guess, I
GJ> have been out of the heavy equipment field for a while.
DD> As I have been away from the trucking business. One of the last heavy
DD> trucks I drove was a White Road Boss. A very nice work platform and the
DD> first "integrated sleeper" conventional (engine in front of the cab)
DD> tractor ... which of course has continued in the Volvo line and been
DD> copied by nearly every heavy truck maker in America. Previously sleeper

I didn't know that. Almost universal here, for interstate truckies.

DD> ... There is much pleasure to be gained from useless knowledge. - B.
 DD> Russell

Agreed.

Title: Fish Relish - Sambal Ikan
 Categories: Indonesian, Condiments, Relishes
      Yield: 6 Servings

           Stephen Ceideburg
      4 oz Tuna fish, or:
      3 oz Eel or:
      3 oz Ikan teri
1 c Thick santen (coconut milk)
      4 Cloves garlic
      3 Shallots, peeled and chopped
      4 Kemiri (candlenuts)
      3 Cabe rawit or:
      2 ts Chilli powder
      2 tb Tamarind water or
      2 ts Tomato puree
      1 ts Brown sugar
           Salt
      2 tb Vegetable oil

I find that the easiest and tastiest Sambal Ikan is made with canned
tuna fish. Sambal made with eel, however, is also delicious; cut the
eel up very small and wash it in vinegar. In Indonesia we make this
sambal with ikan teri or ikan bilis (tiny dried anchovies).

Pound the garlic, shallots, kemiri and cabe rawit into a paste. Fry
this paste in vegetable oil in a wok for about half a minute. Put in
the tuna fish, eel or teri; stir-fry for 1 minute and add the
tamarind water, or tomato puree, sugar and salt. Stir in the santen,
and go on simmering until the mixture becomes thick. This sambal can
  be served hot or cold.
