==========================
Hi Ruth,

->  RH> We have a garbage-burning energy plant here....

-> Have to see what's closer to where my marents live; don't want to spend
-> a lot of money shipping what'll end up in smoke & ashes.

 RH> One thought, if it's not really junk there may be a Take It/leave It
 RH> place at the local dump. It's for stuff that isn't ready to be
 RH> tossed, but you don't want any more.

Haven't the foggiest if there's one of those there. My brother would be
the one to answer that.

-> RH> Pack rats! They were pack rats!

-> Depression era hoaders. Dad was 7 when it started, Mom was 9 months. The

 RH> My parents were both born right into the beginning of it - 1930.

So they were born the year after my mom, 8 years after my dad. They
don't remember it like Dad; he was paid 15 cents an hour to work in the
office at the local lumber yard. His dad earned 10 cents an hour on the
lot. My grandparents wanted Dad to drop out of high school to work full
time but he insisted on staying; he was the first of his family to
finish high school, then go to college (part time at first, full time
after WWII on the GI Bill). Dad said that chicken was expensive then and
beef was cheap so Sunday dinner was usually a roasted chicken.

-> Depression followed by WWII's "use it up, wear it out, etc" made for a
-> generation of uber pack rats. The Baby Boomers are the ones that have to

 RH> We like them now. They saved stuff. Sometimes too much stuff, but
 RH> stuff.

Makes for interesting times cleaning out a house. We not only have to do
it for my parents but also my aunt. Then, too, Steve and I have his
parent's house (but help from siblings).

-> deal with it in the end. I think all of my siblings inherited the genes;
-> I have, to a certain extent but the military moves pretty much thinned
-> them out.

 RH> You get two kinds who lived through that, the pack rats and the
 RH> "everything new"s. The latter got to the end of the War, could
 RH> finally afford and buy new stuff, and never looked back.

Don't know many of them, most all of that generation were savers. That's
why my parents have all those canning jars. (G)

->  RH> small
->  RH> fortune.

-> We'll try to watch out for things like that. I've been going thru Mom's
-> cook books off and on, grabbing ones I know she'll never use and
-> seriously doubt any of my siblings would either. We've replaced their
-> old Pyrex dishes with Corelle but I believe the old ones are packed up
-> and in the basement. Same with some other kitchen things we've replaced.

 RH> Some of those can be worth money now too. Old Pyrex, and especially

Mot what my parents have! a lot of the pieces are big time chipped, a
number of them broken and glued back together. I don't think they could
even put together 4 "clean" place settings out of it all.

 RH> Fire King, in good shape can sell for a pretty penny. A lot of Fire
 RH> King ends up in Japan, believe it or not.

Wouldn't knw Fire King if I fell over it. My parents had a white, with a
red rim pattern. Basic bland. We replaced it 2 years ago; the old stuff
should have been disposed of long ago but for the pack rat genes.

-> RH> That way if your stuff ends up in Laredo and you're in Kansas City,
-> RH> you can still function.

-> Or if we and our stuff end up in Sierra Vista but we've not found
-> housing yet. We know some motels there have kitchenettes so we could do
-> some basic cooking.

 RH> Basic kitchenettes can be a useful thing. A lot of places barely have
 RH> a microwave.

Sierra Vista is a military town. Lots of TDYs and folks moving in/out
all the time. Some long term temporary duty folks like to cook for
themselves a bit instead of eating out for every meal.

-> -> usually above the cook top.

->  RH> I've never liked that arrangement.

-> The above the stove microwave? I've never had it but used it different
-> times. Rachel's kitchen has it, don't recall Deborah's.

 RH> It makes everything so dirty, and you can't use both at the same time
 RH> if you have a gas stove. Open flames and all that. I'd rather have a
 RH> hood up there.

I've got one but it doesn't exhaust to the outside--just keeps recycling
the air back into the kitchen.

Catch you later,
