Thanks. It's  been a long road.

On my first visit to my current doctor, he had to estimate my weight 
because his scale didn't go high enough to measure it.  That was a real
wake-up call for me.  A few months later, I was finally able to weigh
in at his office, and I was 385.  I consider that my "official" starting
weight even though I'm pretty certain I was over 400 that first time.

The weight loss was slow going at first, but noticeable on my medical
charts. I found a medical-style double-beam scale at a rummage sale for
five bucks which was pretty awesome because regular "bathroom scales"
just don't have enough numbers on it for fatasses like me. I weighed
in every month or so, looking at a 5-pound drop here, 8- or 10-pound
loss there.  Then, this past year, I broke through and it accelerated. 
I didn't think much about it until a couple of months ago at work, 
one of the guys said, "Holy shit, you've lost a lot of weight!"  That
was at about the 85-pound mark or so.

When I started losing it, I was a size 56 waist (!!) and now my
size 48 jeans are falling off of me - I should be comfortably into a
46 in another month or so.  I've kept the belt I had at the very
beginning - I just keep punching holes in it and using it.  When it's
buckled now, the end wraps around my side, almost to the back pocket.

The local JC Penney warehouse outlet is closing, so Maryanne and I went
in over the weekend so I can stock up on smaller sizes while I still can.
I used to buy pants there from the returned goods rack because I could
get Levis jeans for $15 a pair (catalog returns that they would send out
to the warehouse store rather than return to stock since I guess they
weren't allowed to sell them as "new") and I hated going to the "Big And 
Tall" store to pay outrageous prices for their ill-fitting fatman pants.
Because the outlet is  closing, everything there is 40% off. So I bought 
a few 46s, a few 44s, and a couple of 42s to be prepared (at $7-something 
a pair I figured what the hell, right?)

My eventual goal is to get down to a 40, which is what I was when 
Maryanne and I were married. I was comfortable then, carried it well,
and looked pretty good at 6'0 and 200 lbs. 

For now, I'm just really happy to get on the scale, slide the little
counterweights over, and find that my weight no longer starts with the
digit "3."

Oh, and I've done it without any pills or fad diets or gimmicks. I had
tried the Atkins Diet a few years ago, lost a shitload of weight and 
then immediately put it all back again.  This time around I haven't
done any of that crap, I just worked on changing my eating habits and
tried to get more exercise. I still eat whatever the hell I want, just
less of it, and I don't get all OCD about planning meals or counting
calories. I don't plan on doing that for the rest of my life, so why
bother even starting?
