===================
Aloha Michael!

-> HN> Yay for Lilli! Give her a hug from us and
-> HN> have FUN in Waikiki! Ahhh my old stompin
->  HN> grounds...
->
-> We did okay in Waikiki. Walked around the beach
-> a lot, ate at cheap dives, got a free bottle of
-> Champers (pink California sparkling wine, actually,
-> from Woodbridge Champagne Cellars) that saved us
-> several drinks. Though we did end up with Longboard
-> Ale (for me) and cheap red wine (for her) at maybe
-> half a dozen places.
->
Ahhh Waikiki...I remember it well!

-> I wonder if the Seaside or Moose Mcgillicuddy's was
-> around when you were, or even if the neighborhood is
-> still at all recognizable. I had some lovely Spam
-> and Portuguese sausage at the former and some lovely
-> alcohol at Moose's, where we had gone to give Amy
-> the bartender the sad news that our buddy Dave, who
-> had introduced us to the place a couple years ago,
-> had died. Luckily Amy doesn't work there any more,
-> so we didn't have to bum her out. If she still
-> worked there, we might have wanted to let her know
-> why he didn't show up any more, but this way, ...
->
Never heard of either of them...We lived about
one block from the Ilikai hotel, on Ena road
when we first got married..even the Hale Koa
had not been planned at that point.

-> An interesting meal at the Side Street Inn on Hopaka
-> off Piikoi: a big plate of "ocean clam sashimi,"
-> which contrary to its name was boiled clams, big
-> ones, bellies discarded, 27 of them for $10. They
-> had been tenderized in some way and tasted almost
-> exactly like canned abalone, something that costs
-> tons of money but is still somewhat disappointing
-> to eat. For $8, as I didn't particularly care for
-> Lilli to starve, we also got a pound plate of
-> Chinese-style roast pork belly, which was pretty
-> good in a Chinatown greasy spoon way. I had of
-> course Longboards; she had Kunde Cabernet, which
-> was a relative bargain at $6 the glass, and whose
-> spicy peppery flavor went well with the meat.
->
That's over by the Ala Moana shopping center...not
quite Waikiki "proper" but close...I used to store
my car there (the jag) when I was at sea, the
Mercedes dealership was near there. At least
it was back in the 60's and early 70's...

-> Nother sort of interesting meal: the Surf Lanai at
-> the Royal Hawaiian, where as a Starwood Platinum
-> she got a free lunch, which consisted of an appie
-> of the house's choice (I forget what it was), a
-> main course out of a choice of 4 (Lilli got a
-> wagyu cheeseburger), and dessert. The burger,
-> ordered medium-rare, came medium of course (she
-> never learns) and was quite unluscious, not very
-> wagyu, but whatever, the price was right. The
-> place got its pound of flesh even as we got ours,
-> though: I got the $22 red wine braised short ribs
-> with "crushed potato and parsnip" and grilled
-> asparagus - pretty good but way overpriced, about
-> half a pound of decent short ribs that had a decent
-> amount of fat: three pieces, almost perfect cubes
-> and clearly prefrozen, in a very heavily thickened
-> but decent gravy. The asparagus were quite good,
-> the crushed stuff indistinguishable from mashed
-> potatoes out of a boil-in-bag. Dessert: haupia cake,
-> somewhat dry.
->
Any time you're in the "pink palace" you're
gonna be losing money. One of the great
things about living in Hawaii, was that you
found the great (read cheap!) good places to
eat, and usually they were not in Waikiki.
Used to get great Chinese food at a place
called Hong Kun restaurant in Kaimuki...
probably long gone by now...it was like a
great big cafeteria and the waitresses
(never saw a waiter) would go by pushing
big carts...you'd point at what you
wanted and they'd put it on your table.
Your bill was determined by how many plates
and what colors they were! Half the time
we had no idea what we were eating but
it sure was good!!

-> The rest of our food was burgers, fruit, or whatever
-> was free or cheap at the bars.
->
I remember the bars...did they
have Primo Beer available? I'd have
asked for you to get me a Primo
Shirt if you could have found one!
-> --
->
-> -> It's strong, but it can't be nastier than the
->  -> Septra.
-> HN> Never had that, but they claimed that the
-> HN> cipro course that we had was just about
-> HN> the strongest and most "potent" antibiotic
->  HN> given.
->
-> Cipro is one of of the most broad-spectrum, but it is
-> not nearly as nasty - its side effects won't kill anyone,
-> but Septra has been known to do patients in. But I
-> understand Vancomycin and Daptomycin are both stronger
-> and nastier.

Well that's what they told us at the time
and that was what they gave us to counteract
the "anthrax" scare. Fortunately our anthrax
turned out to be cornstarch..on the east coast
the postal workers were not so lucky.
 So where are you NOW??
chat with you soon!
