NB>> Well, mostly... a few carbs (like dietary fiber) apparently don't
NB>> count against you... :) But yes, I have to watch the total carbs for
NB>> her, and the naturally occurring sugars, etc...

MR> Yeah, that is true, another thing I had to learn. The glycemic <sp?>
MR> index of foods. How You can reduce the carbs by fiber etc. I use ( I
MR> can't think of the name cuz I want to. ) wraps that are about 15 grams
MR> of carbs, but 9 grams of fiber, so only about 6 grams count, I would
MR> imagine give or take though. But they make good tuna sandwiches etc.

Yup you got the spelling right. Another thing that seems odd about the
glycemic index is that sweet potatoes/yams are less than white potatoes,
so they are better for you. That was an easy substitution for MJ to
make, as she loves the sweet potatoes... :) As long as one doesn't
load them with extra fats and sugars, of course. But she likes them
just baked, or cooked like the white potatoes. (I like them, too, so I
get them all the time for us, too... )

MR> This is true. Like I was saying to Sean, and he does the same, most
MR> will say about 60grams a meal. For me, I try to keep it 60-100 a day.
MR> I just do better and if I do go over sometimes, it is not a big deal
MR> as if I did the reccomended and then did a few more. Each individual
 MR> is different.

About all I can do for her is to pay attention to the carbs per serving,
and generally not even buy anything for her that is more than a certain
amount (that would put her over the reasonable daily intake if portion
size is paid attention to).

NB>> carbs... ;) I'm not the one cooking for her, though... and the aides
NB>> don't always "get" it, and sometimes bring her treats from home that

MR> Heheheh Sometimes those treats keep us going... As long as it isn't
 MR> often.

I don't worry about the once in a great while stuff... but I do get a
bit more concerned when sugar-sweetened cereal boxes show up on her
counter next to the O's and bran flakes that she usually eats, and
heavily sweetened bbq sauce appears in the cupboard... etc...

MR> I always remember one day, It was shortly before my Mother passed due
MR> to complications from diabetes, She was almost 80 at the time. My
MR> Father was razzing her about something she was eating, and she just
MR> said. " At my age, I don't think it is going to hurt to splurge once
MR> in a while, the damage is already done! A treat is nice, how much
MR> longer am I going to live anyway and in what condition. Simple things
MR> sometimes are just made to enjoy" I couldn't fault her on that, we
MR> would always nag her, and for the most part she did well, but there
MR> were those occasions where she just wanted something she loved to eat
MR> and at that age, she was right.. At that age, how much time was she
MR> going to lose due to eating that piece of Pumpking pie or whatever on
 MR> the Holiday?

Agreed... at some point, one might as well eat as one likes, since it
really won't make any difference... When HL was declining, and it was
clear that she wasn't going to be around for much longer, to get her to
eat anything was enough of a struggle that even if she was eating all
the wrong stuff for her diabetes it really wasn't going to be a problem.
She wasn't getting enough carbs to spike the blood glucose no matter
what, and if some of her comfort foods gave her a reason to eat
something, then she might as well have them...

NB>> routine (not sliding) shot of Lantus daily... plus extra cinnamon and
NB>> a few other helpful herbs and such in a supplement that the doctor
 NB>> okayed for her... :)

MR> Thats all You can do is support, You can't make life miserable. Some
MR> people, Like my Father could be a pain in the butt to my Mom. Always
MR> harping as he had his second piece of pie <grin>

That's the worst sort... the ones that throw it in your face that you
can't have it but they can, nyah, nyah... makes you just want to kick
them to the moon... (G)

MR> Yeah, someone like Sean may know better, but I think Lantus is a
MR> loooong acting insulin and works like over 17 hours, so probably once
MR> a day would be all she would need of her dose. I take Cinnamon

Yeah, it's a long acting one, and the usual administration is only once
a day. I heard that some get it at night, but she gets hers in the
morning, usually. As I understand it, it's supposed to even out the
blood sugar through the day...

MR> capsules too, I don't know if they help, but You make think it is
MR> funny, But I like it when I burp, It is as if I had a cinnamon roll,
MR> but did not remember 8-) I just keep tasting it.

Empirically, it did seem as though it made a difference for her. Dunno
if she gets the burp-back benefit, though... ;)

MR> As Sean Said, I think maybe moving this out of this echo would be good
MR> idea so as not to intrude on the real essence of the echo. I will have

As long as we are talking foods, I don't think there is any problem
here... not everyone has recipes, but food and drink are pretty much the
mainstays here... ;) And things often stray to related topics (or not
too related topics) just because it's a(nother) family in here... ;)

MR> to check and see if Thoms Diabetes echo is still up. I know he said if
MR> it was not being used he was going to pull it, as before.

Haven't seen any traffic lately... I've been lurking there, mostly
because of MJ...
