============================
Hi Mike,

RH> few strawberries in my time that weren't worth eating. One exception
RH> is the ones in our back yard here; I figure they are some sort of

MR> Hmm, maybe it is a variety that is not that sweet..??? I dunno, I do

We figured it was an ornamental variety. Looks pretty but tastes lousy.

MR> see up here they offer several varieties. But I could not tell them
MR> apart. Just like oranges. You would think oranges would be oranges,
MR> except for Navel or florida etc, but depending on when they pick them

I know, grapes are like that too. Black, red, or green are about the
only major distinctives until you bite into one & find out if it's sweet
or tart, seeds or seedless. Apples are somewhat more distinctive.

MR> can make a difference. I even think in the rush to get them out, they
MR> paint some of them orange, and they are really green... Oops getting
 MR> sidtracked <grin>

Some varieties don't get really orange; they are naturally green colored
when ripe. The orange is a dye in some cases.

RH> sweets intake a bit. I was raised on NY state maple syrup for
RH> pancakes, waffles, etc and to this day it's my topping of choice. (G)

MR> Yummmmm... 8) I often see up here when the syrup is really running
MR> they have all these little area Maple farms open up these pancake
MR> joints just for the season. The Guy on our local news who does the

What part of the state are you in? I never noticed any "Open House"
maple farms but I've not lived in the state for years. In grade school
(I think first & second grades, maybe third) we visited a farm with a
working maple syrup making side. Watching the sap boil in the
evaporator was really something!

MR> vacation spots throughout the year, always takes the time in the
MR> spring to take You around via his film clips and show You all these
MR> restaurants and how they make the syrup right on the premises with the
MR> buckwheat cakes etc. Man that looks good!!

My younger brother did some sap gathering for a number of years. Just
several trees on and around my folk's property. The first year my mom
could boil it down on the stove; got maybe a cup or so of syrup. It got
to the point where they did it outside on the gas grill--until a fire
one year put an end to it. Nothing serious but the potential for
problems made them decide to give it up. That, and other commitments on
my brother's part & aging parents.

RH> I'm drinking a lot more water than I used to. We run some thru a
RH> filter for drinking or use in making tea, juice, etc but I can take
RH> limited amounts of the tapwater here. I tried some mix ins for

MR> I have one of those osmosis filters, it is a pain to the affect that
MR> it has to be maintained every so often and at a fairly steep price.

If it does a good job, then it's worth every penny of the cost to keep
it well maintained.

MR> However to me and the amount of water I drink, I guess it is worth it.
MR> Fill a few jugs of this water and put in refrig, and it is good
MR> tasting stuff, to me anyway. And it's no where near what people pay
MR> for bottled water and to me tastes much better. But just tapwater here
MR> is not the greatest, although, I can't complain, when I lived out of
MR> the city, You could run into all kinds of strange waters. Mostly of
MR> the variety that have that sulfur smell etc. Yech!

We had sulpher water in Berlin. One of Steve's brothers & his wife had
sulpher water really bad this summer. They have a well but we're
thinking the dry summer, possible seepage from the canal and other
issues made it bad. They don't want to pay to tap into town water but
were spending a good bit of money on bottled water for drinking and
cooking. They live west of Rochester.

RH> A busy day; did my usual Friday stuff this morning and will start a
RH> class this afternoon. It will meet all day tomorrow too, with work
RH> due over the next couple of weeks.

MR> Well Good Luck with that and have a good One!

Thanks, I'm done with the classroom work, reviewing to take the test on
line and doing research for a 2 page paper due next Friday.
