-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

ML> I figure in my 70-75 years of life I will have had more
ML> enjoyment than most people get in 80-85 years.
GJ> You are getting on! I do agree, however, and consider I have already
GJ> had a lot more interesting experiences in my 80 years than my parents
GJ> had in their 90 years. And I am not finished yet.

ML> Yes indeed, I am getting on. Getting on reasonably well, as well.

Glad to hear that your metal artery dilators are still functioning
properly, and the hole in your head served its medical purpose, as
well as being the subject of a few jokes at your expense. (I have had
to put up with comments about being an old "hippy".)

GJ> A friend of mine was on Lipitor for years, before switching to
GJ> something new, and then realised the Lipitor had been associated with
 GJ> continued mild depression.
ML> Perhaps the lowered cholesterol is associated with the continued
 ML> mild depression.

The alternative (French) medication worked on the cholesterol just as
well, but didn't result in depression.

GJ> In another post you referred to "antibiotic poisoning". That is
GJ> something I have never heard of. Do you only get it by taking
GJ> antibiotics, by injection or orally, or also from eating meat from
ML> One hopes that the antibiotics used in farming don't cause such
ML> problems or at least that the residual amount in the flesh is
ML> small enough to be neglected. Anyhow, antibiotics can be poisonous

Our supermarkets are advertising "No antibiotics" used in their meaty
animals. Some customers are nervous about that.

The upsurge in recent years of children's allergies is quite worrying.
Some medics have put it down to food additives, others to anti-biotic
sprays, washes and excessive cleanliness in the home isolating small
children from wild bacteria needed to endure proper development of the
children's immune systems.

ML> to you as they are to microscopic bugs. Some are worse than
ML> others, and the sulfa drug cocktail that Lilli was put on a number
ML> of times this year is one of the more troublesome.

Adverse side effects of sulfa drugs have been known for ages. Aren't
they a "last resort" these days?

 ML> Eppur si muove!
GJ> I fail to understand the relevance to the kangaroos.

GJ> What a convoluted mind you have! That train of reasoning based on
GJ> Galileo's supposed muttered comment would never have occurred to me.

ML> It seemed reasonably straightforward to me; but then some
ML> things that are quite obvious to me are relatively obscure
ML> to others. Whether that's a sign of cleverness or derangement
ML> it's often hard to tell: as my brother points out to me,
ML> perhaps as a way of justifying his own thinking, a genius
ML> finds patterns when nobody else can find them; a psychotic
ML> finds patterns when there are no patterns.

Such as the psychotic who blames his therapist for all the porno
Rorschach pictures...

ML> Your mention of having weighted ones suggests an experiment
ML> whereby you do a task identically side by side and see if
ML> the gauge and the jigglers behave consistently. Using a
ML> set of different weights you can do a graph
GJ> Too many variables to get a valid comparison.

ML> Two equal burners, two equal tasks, a number of jigglers,
 ML> why too many variables?

The main indeterminate variable is the dissimilar pressure cookers.

 ML> Better to take the
GJ> gauge to the local steam train enthusiasts for calibration testing.

ML> Never having been one, and not having seen one since I last
ML> set eyes on Greg (how are the Maymans doing, by the way), I'd
ML> not have thought of that excellent and easy solution.

Greg is still as pedantic as ever, and alternately performing on stage
in the chorus of "Pirates of Penzance" and as driver of steam
locomotives on school holidays. In the past I have used a dead weight
tester to check/calibrate pressure gauges. I simple process.

 GJ> If a jiggler-type pressure cooker is over-filled, so that a baked
GJ> bean, for example, gets stuck in the small orifice used by the
GJ> jiggler, the pressure, and consequently the temperature, could
GJ> increase dramatically, until the fusible plug melts, allowing a geyser
GJ> of uncooked beans to spray out. The pressure gauge type of cooker
GJ> would indicate a dangerous pressure before blowing its top.

ML> What if the channel leading to the pressure gauge is
 ML> likewise clogged?

It doesn't. There is a flow of steam through the jiggler, which can
carry the bean, but the volume of steam moving into a pressure gauge
required to actuate it is infinitesimal, and insufficient to lift a
bean. These days all pressure cookers have a fusible plug which melts
at a temperature corresponding to the maximum safe pressure (except
mine, for which I require a new fusible plug. But then, as an
engineer, I know how to bypass safety devices...).
