I have also seen some people holding their knives that way, but I, and
most Australians, hold the knife like a scalpel, in the right hand,
with the fork kept in the left hand.  The main test for "USA-ness",
though is whether or not they swap knives and forks between mouthfuls,
using the fork in the right hand to pick up the cut food.  Filipinos
and most SE Asians prefer spoon and fork, with food tender enough to
be cut with the edge of the spoon.

You have to be careful, however, that gravy doesn't leak out the back
of the pie, making the bottom of the paper bag soggy and soft, so it
is likely to suddenly give way in the excitement as your team is about
to get a goal, depositing the hot contents in your lap.

I remember reading about that at school.  Something to do with the
colonials preferring to drink coffee instead of tea.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05
 
      Title: Cherry Sorbet
 Categories: Dessert, Frozen, Fruit
      Yield: 6 Servings
 
      1 c  Water
    1/3 c  Sugar
  1 1/2 lb Cherries, pitted
    1/4 c  Lemon juice
      1 tb Cherry brandy, optional2
      2 tb Maraschino cherries, diced,
           -- optional
 
  Combine the water, sugar & pitted cherries in a non-corrosive pot &
  bring to a boil.  Simmer for 5 minutes.  Remove from the heat & let
  cool. Puree the mixture in a food processor or blender & strain
  through a fine sieve to remove the skins.  Combine this mixture with
  the rest of the ingredients. Freeze following the instructions for
  making Lemon Sorbet.
