My point was that given the way copper pipes and fitting slide together, a
properly sweated joint will not expose more than extremely minimal solder to
the water. Of course in this day of legislation/regulation by "Oh, my g*d",
pressure group, etc. who always see the absolute worst case scenario for all
events ... uh, I'll shut up lest I get off on a rant. Suffice it to say that
the situation is analogous to the EPA going after every molecule of loose lead
or benzene or whatever their cause of the day happens to be.

If you can afford it - tin works well. Pewter is a malleable metal alloy,
traditionally 95-99% tin, with the remainder consisting of copper, antimony and
bismuth. Copper and antimony act as hardeners. Pewter is fairly easy to work
with for casting - although I have not soldered with it - except in soldering
pewter handles onto pewter drinking vessels (tankards, mostly) which can be
tricky as all the metals are the same with the same melting point.

The "silver solder" I used in jewelry making was *much* more silver bearing
than the stuff I used in repairing refrigeration equipment - if it had any
silver at all it was tiny percentages -- as reflected in the price.

DS> Also, if you have a lot of lead solder joints in your plumbing and

I'm not worried about it. Hell, the Romans used lead pipes, lead plates, lead
tableware, etc. and look where it got them ... Gina Lollabrigida, Sophia Loren,
Leonardo DaVinci, Guglielmo Marconi, etc. Of course it also got them Silvio
Berlusconi. Bv)=

-> The main drawback is that it requires higher heat and is harder to

-> If you think copper and PVC leach - try living in an old structure with

It's all pretty much moot for me, now. This mobile home is PVC (mostly). And I
can wield a glue pot with the best of them. Bv)=
