============================
Hi Mike,

RH> We figured it was an ornamental variety. Looks pretty but tastes
 RH> lousy.

MR> Ahh that explains it. I did not know there was such a thing...

Now you do. (G)

RH> I know, grapes are like that too. Black, red, or green are about the
RH> only major distinctives until you bite into one & find out if it's
RH> sweet or tart, seeds orseedless. Apples are somewhat more

MR> That reminds me, this is true, when I was a kid, I would go over to
MR> the neighbors house and had the trellis <sp?> and a grape vine would
MR> am sure the adults loved it. You would go in and pick some grapes.
MR> They were fairly large and dark purple, looked luscious. But when you
MR> bit into them, only the part just around the skin was sweet, the rest
MR> was sour. So we would end up sucking the inside of the grape, the meat
MR> and seeds, spitting that out and chewing on just that layer of meat
MR> near the skin. Chew the sking too long and it also became sour.

Typical kid thing. You probably would have cleaned them out had the
grapes been sweet. My dad's grapes never did that good while I was at
home; I think the growing season was too short. Frost would get them and
he'd have sort of a semi raisin result.

RH> sweet or tart, seeds orseedless. Apples are somewhat more
 RH> distinctive.

MR> I used to love to pick and eat those tart green apples. As we were
MR> growing up in the country. Take a break from a ballgame and have a few
MR> green apples. trouble is, most apple trees where we were were wild and
MR> worms got to them early if You let them get ripe.

Even domestic ones, if not sprayed often enough get wormy.

RH> Some varieties don't get really orange; they are naturally green
RH> colored when ripe. The orange is a dye in some cases.

MR> Learn something everyday... I did not know that.

To be filed, with the information on strawberries, under the "you learn
something new every day" folder header. (G)

RH> What part of the state are you in? I never noticed any "Open House"
RH> maple farms but I've not lived in the state for years. In grade

MR> Oh, I am from Rochester, Grew up in Avon NY for the most part. Living

Do they still have the Annis Dairy store in Avon? We went there once
and got ice cream cones that were quite generous; they really knew how
to pile it on! The list of flavors was quite impressive too.

MR> in Rochester now. I don't know how new they are, but most of these
MR> open house maple syrup farms are in the southern tier area. Two right
MR> off the top of my head are one in Springwater, near wayland. And
MR> another one in Angelica NY and one just near the alleghany Cattaraugus

There's a nice B&B in Angelica; we stayed there several years ago (The
Angelica Inn). That's the town where the place we got ice cream at
tried to claim the Moose Tracks flavor had no peanut butter in; I found
out the hard way that it did and suggested they post a sign to that
effect.

MR> county border. They also advertised one south of Syracuse, but I don't
MR> remember the town. There are a few more all along that belt down in
MR> the southern part of the state. I guess it was a smart way to make a
MR> few extra bucks during the season. All You can eat
MR> pancakes, fresh syrup, tours etc. for some decent price. I still
MR> haven't gone, but always say I'd like to one of these days.

Go soon, one of these dyas there will be no more "one of these days"
left. We had promised ourselves we would go to the fish fry the one
church here in town does every so often as a money raiser. We went
tonight; got it to go--haddock, semi mashed red potatoes, cole slaw and
hush puppies. Can cross that off our "one of these days" list now. (G)

RH> My younger brother did some sap gathering for a number of years. Just
RH> several trees on and around my folk's property. The first year my mom
RH> could boil it down on the stove; got maybe a cup or so of syrup. It

MR> Isn't that something, how much sap it takes to make a useable amount
 MR> of syrup?!?

Yes, a 40:1 ratio does make for lots of sap being needed. That's just
for the light amber; the darker syrup, sugar candy, etc take even more
sap.

RH> Thanks, I'm done with the classroom work, reviewing to take the test
RH> on line and doing research for a 2 page paper due next Friday.

MR> Keep burning the midnight oil ;-)

We are. I got the test done on line today. Tomorrow I'll start pulling
together research for the paper that's due next Friday. After that, a
break for me until mid October but I'll start gathering the material I
need to read before my November week end (first week end of the month)
class. Steve is working almost constantly; his classes go for 16 weeks
(with a one week mid term break).

Catch you later,
