The soap, or detergent, combined with the rubbing action, serves to
loosen the dirt and skin oils containing the bacteria.  One of my
visiting children left a spray can containing stuff ("Oust 3 in 2")
which allegedly kills 99% of bacteria and viruses in the air or on
surfaces.  It also claims to make toilets smell good and destroy mould
and fungus.  I haven't used it.  Its active ingredient is given as
Alkyl dimethylbenzylammonium saccharinate 0.2%.

I doubt if that would be necessary.  I have never worried about the
slight bitterness inherent in cassava.  I doesn't have much flavour.

      Title: Cassava Savouries
 Categories: Apperisers, Snacks, Asia-se, Charmaine
      Yield: 20 servings
 
    250 g  Grated cassava
    1/2 ts Salt; to taste
    1/2 ts Freshly ground black pepper
      1    Chillies; >2, finely chop
      1 tb Finely chop coriander; or
           ;spring onions  or snipped
           ;fresh dill
      1    Onions; finely chopped
      1 sm Eggs; beaten
           Oil; for deep frying
 
  When you see grated cassava, buy some and try this. Or peel cassava
  tubers and grate in a food processor.
  
  Put cassava in a bowl and toss lightly with fingers. Remove any tough
  fibres.
  
  Combine grated cassava with salt and pepper, chillies, fresh herb and
  onion. Add beaten egg and mix well. If egg is large, reserve some of
  it rather than risk the mixture becoming too wet to handle.
  
  Form into small balls no more than 2.5cm in diameter. Heat oil and
  deep fry the cassava savouries (not too many at one time) in peanut
  or other vegetable oil until golden, about 5 minutes. Lift out on a
  slotted spoon to a colander lined with paper towels. Serve warm.
  Makes about 20.
