==========================
Ahoy Michael!

->
-> HN> She's still doing "better than expected"
->
-> Excellent.
->
Well, 'better than expected" at least (grin)

-> HN> which while I'm happy to hear, still means
-> HN> she's getting her butt kicked by the cumulative
-> HN> effects of the toxins they pump into her each
-> HN> week. Only one more to go though!
->
-> Pretty poisonous stuff. Is she doing the tamoxifen
-> thing as well?
->
Yep, pretty toxic all in all, basically
napalming the body and rebuilding from
the ashes. As for the Tamoxifen, we
don't know that yet but I'm expecting the
answer will be yes, but sometime after
the radiation therapy has concluded.
One more chemo then on to the radiation
regimen.

-> -=> Hap Newsom said to Ruth Haffly <=-
->
-> -> HN> really great! Anne will get her
-> -> HN> tattoos when the Radiologist has
-> -> HN> studied her CT Scan and made up
->  ->  HN> her treatment plan..and he says they
-> -> HN> will be really really REALLY small.!
-> -> They are small, trust me. Hardly visible unless you know what/where
to
->  -> look.
-> HN> I was kinda thinking they would be larger,
-> HN> like arrows pointing to the "spot" or targets
-> HN> with the bullseye where focal point was...I'm
-> HN> almost disappointed that it is going to be so
->  HN> miniscule!
->
-> They look like little blue moles. I believe that
-> they are just guides for the machinery and have to
-> be tiny to allow for exact alignment. I wonder what
-> they do for people who are already tattooed where
-> the marks are supposed to go.
->
Neon colors?

-> HN> Both Anne's radiologist and her primary oncologist
-> HN> are saying the fatigue will be much less during
-> HN> radiation than it was during chemo. Chemo has
->  HN> been kicking Anne's posterior quite a bit!
->
-> That's the way it is. Carol B. refused chemo for that
-> reason and just went with a tamoxifen and radiation
-> regimen that allowed her to stay working the whole time.
->
Anne's was of a type that generated the
same reaction from every person who looked
at her files...basically through everything
you can at it and hope for success. They were
amazed ( and VERY glad) that it was close to
the surface and Anne caught it extremely early!
Surgery was extremely successful and the surgeon
thought she might not even need chemo it went so
well...till he saw the oncotype and DNA reports.

-> HN> Amanda's Exit Seminar has been called off
-> HN> for the time being, several of her committee
-> HN> members are not able to make it out to Bodega
-> HN> Bay for the seminar so "rescheduling" is now
-> HN> the watchword. She may in fact have to do it
->  HN> in January now
->
-> Sad to hear the delay. Of course she'll do great, but
-> you've mentioned this confidence issue that she has to
-> work on, and this just gives her more months to stew!
-> Speaking of stew, expect an e-mail.
->
Tentative schedule *now* is 19 Dec...maybe
(grin)! Is the email I'm to expect the one
I just replied to?

-> Are the committee all people she's worked with, or are
-> they outside experts in the field? Either way, what's
-> in it for them? I mean, they have to take time out from
-> their schedules, truck out to Bodega Bay, probably stay
-> over, etc. It is a pretty neighborhood, but still ... .
->
They are all professors at UC Davis. Some are
out at Bodega Bay Marine Labs, some are at the
main campus...but as in the case of Amanda's
PhD Advisor, some travel a LOT for both research
and for Conferences and such (Amanda's advisor
was testifying before a Congressional Subcommittee
earlier this year). In the past year I think she's
been to Figi three times, New Zealand at least once,
and Thailand on vacation, as well as other trips to
various conferences and such. They are also "heavily booked"
most of the time. I think there is a certain level
of requirement that they be on grad students committees
and if they refuse too many, they find the other profs
start finding reasons not to be on THEIR grad students
committees as well. Amanda's advisor is pretty high up
in terms of visibility in the research world so her
grad students tend to attract "A list" prof's...and
sometimes makes "booking" them a bit of a juggling
act. Amanda has a really great committee and has a
good working relationship with all of them, (they
have been advising and working with her all along
this process). The Exit Seminar is a Formality
that marks the end. But in reality every member
of her committee has "signed off" on her status
before they will allow her to do the Exit Seminar.
(which is followed by a big party at which the new
PhD is the guest of honor). To most it is more
"special" than doing the walk for the new "robe"
