Ärende: Pies for Thanksgiving 1

In the middle of the summer, I took an inventory of my baking
supplies and found to my horror that I was down to two pie
plates, both of them milk-white Pyrex which Maryanne and I
"inherited" when we bought The Last House (they were in the pantry
when we moved in.)

How does that even happen?  When we moved in, we brought quite a
number of 9-inch glass plates with us - 2 Pyrex in cranberry color,
3 Pyrex is standard clear, and two ceramic plates with pie recipes
printed in the glaze.  And we had 2 Pyrex deep-dish 10-inch plates 
as well.

Now this might sound like a lot of pie plates, but Maryanne and I
bake a lot of pies, and at holiday time we fill a sideboard with
different pies so that the dessert table is almost as much as a feast
as the main event.  For us to have dwindled to two plates!!

Eventually, we tracked down what happened to the plates.  The two ceramic
ones were easy - they had been given to us by Maryanne's ex-Mother=In-Law,
a delightful woman who was so gracious and kind to us even though Maryanne
had divorced her son that even *I* called her "Memere." When my step-
daughter Jamie moved back to the area from Florida, we gave her those
pie plates because she had an assortment of them she'd collected over the
years and because they were, after all, from her grandmother and we thought
she should have them.

And the glass plates?  Turns out that they had never been returned by
people to whom we had brought pies. INCLUDING MY OWN SISTER!!  Oh, well.
I told my sister she could keep the ones she had, partly because she had
started with no pie plates at all (! - c'mon, you're nearly 40 and had
nothing in which to bake a pie?) and because of my dirty little secret:
I have never, EVER, bought a pie plate at retail.  They are as common as
dirt at church rummage sales and estate sales, and I've never even paid
more than 50c each for them.

And so, over the summer, we were on a mission to find pie plates - as
usual, at rummage, tag, and estate sales.  And one corner of my pantry is
stacked high with lovely glass pie plates once again, in 10-inch deep
dish, 9-inch standard, and 8-inch small standard sizes.  Just in time
for holiday pie making!
