==================
Connie and John had us over for cocktails and dinner
(vegetarian, as Linda had exhausted her tolerance for
all things meaty except bacon - she loves bacon and
has it for breakfast as often as possible). Charlie,
the elder son, just about breaking out in adulthood,
was seen drinking a Peak IPA, which warmed my heart,
as I thought he was being just a bit of a sissy with
his Coronas; unfortunately when his doting aunt
arrived with Coronas he abandoned real beer for fake,
downing the six-pack by the end of the evening and
getting drunk enough to become enamored of his mother's
rather sexy black boots, which bemused some of the rest
of us but didn't seem to faze her. To change the
subject, John pulled out an annotated copy of The Waste
Land (get it?), with Ezra Pound's emendations, most of
which were substantially lucid, unlike his own poems.
We gave our own obviously sane and sober analyses of
the work, of which I had substantial memory from my
readings of it in the 1960s despite or perhaps because
of lashings of Jim Beam.

Connie's appetizer was a variation on this:

Wasabi Appetizer

8 oz block Cream Cheese
1 Tube Wasabi Paste
2 Tb Chopped Chives or Green Onions
2 ts toasted sesame seeds (optional garnish)
3 ts Soy Sauce

Take the cream cheese out of the refrigerator, unwrap
and put on a microwavable plate. Defrost for 30 sec or
until soft enough to easily spread.

Spread cream cheese on a piece of saran wrap until it's
about a 1/2" thick and an area of 10 x 5".

Cover the cream cheese with a thin layer of wasabi paste.
You will use approx. 3/4 of the tube.

With the help of the Saran Wrap, proceed to roll the
cream cheese/wasabi tightly, like a jelly roll, so that
it is long and skinny. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Place on platter.

Garnish with sprinkles of Sesame Seeds (Optional) and Chives.
Top off with Soy Sauce and Serve with cracker of your choice
(Recommendation: Rice Crackers).

It's so easy and always a hit at parties.

You'll have everyone fooled! [M's note: about what?]

In her version, you take the block of cream cheese, cut
horizontally, spread each half with wasabi paste, reassemble,
cover with toasted sesame seeds, and drizzle soy sauce around.

John made spinach and cheese crepes for our main course,
in a very nice presentation involving a bowl, so that when
the bowl was inverted over the serving plate, the crepes
came out in a hemisphere, each serving a slice of this
timballo thing. On the side: roast asparagus. It was all
very tasty, and there wasn't a scrap left over.

Dessert was a pinwheel cookie with raisins, recipe from
Connie's sister.

I have recipes for neither of the above, but one could
probably duplicate them more or less by guesstimation.

More booze and coffee and conversation (we tried to
ignore the boys - the younger, Will, was tired and had a
cold and was easy to ignore; Charlie, it sometimes took a
bit of effort not to notice his antics), and when it was
time to go, John asked me what to do with leftover crepes
(extra that didn't make it into the timpano/timballo), and
do they freeze? (answer: yes, but the texture suffers). I
told him that he could take them to the leftover party at
Sue's on Saturday; he got this stricken look and asked
what to fill them with? I told him to shut up and give
them to me and I'd make something in his and Connie's name.

Someone asked how many crepes there were; I hefted the
baggie and said 12, which everyone believed.
