I was at Hotter Than Hell Night at the East Coast Grill once
and was chowing merrily down, when something struck me wrong:
it wasn't all that hot per se, but one particular dish seemed
utterly sick-making, and I don't know why - it felt as though
my stomach were about to turn over in its grave. Everyone else
at my table was happily ingesting the stuff. Chris Schlesinger
came over (embarrassingly) to commiserate, and everyone in the
joint probably thought that I had wimped out on one of the
famously hot things, but that wasn't what was going on. My
stomach still churns when I think about it almost a decade later.

I like Voortman's products - pleasantly infantile. But that's
not what I was thinking of. These were brown inch-square or a
bit bigger cookies of that very air-filled and thus both soft
and brittle consistency, filled with a dryish paste of not-too-
fine-ground peanuts and sugar. I found them quite moreish.

With the double whammy of peanuts and peanut butter, you
can be certain that that's the main impression that the
cookies will give, coconut and oatmeal and all sorts of
other stuff notwithstanding.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v7.07

      Title: Honey Crunch Peanut Spread
 Categories: Desserts
   Servings:  6

  1 1/4 c  Peanut butter
    2/3 c  Toasted oats (below)
    1/2 c  Honey

  Combine all ingredients; mix well. Store in tightly covered container in
  refrigerator. Serve as a sandwich spread, on celery and carrot sticks or on
  apple and pear slices.

  Variations: Add 4 crisply cooked bacon slices, crumbled.

  Add 1/2 cup raisins or semi-sweet chocolate pieces.

  How to make the toasted oats (above):

  1. place 1 to 2 cups Quaker Oats (Quick or Old-Fashioned, uncooked) in
  ungreased jelly roll pan or 15x10 cookie sheet.

  2. Bake in preheated moderate oven (350) for about 15 minutes or til edges
  are light golden brown, stirring once during cooking.

  3. Cool; store in tightly covered container in fridge up to 6 mos.
