When that sort of thing happens, sometimes I can trace back a
thread, sometimes it remains a total mystery.

I survived, and there wasn't anything too awful to deal with
other than substantial filth, including more than usual in the
kitchen. Jonathan explained it away by my being a day earlier
than I said, which I had to check my e-mail to verify that
this was total fiction. It was bad enough that I didn't eat
a proper meal in the several days I was there, subsisting on
over-the-hill dried fruit, a chocolate stash, two pouches of
microwave popcorn, and a can of soup - the kitchen would have
needed substantial hours of cleaning to be useful, and it was
too cold for me to go out, and I was too bummed anyhow.

Well, don't anyone imagine that I wasn't scarred by the same
issues that shaped his personality and behaviors or that seeing
the problems laid out in front of me doesn't affect my own outlook.

It's that same workaholism that one sees elsewhere, probably
fueled by some of the same issues: need to bolster self-esteem,
to keep one's mind off grief and/or other problems, and so on.

Pretty much: my reputation exceeds the amount of money
I made at doing what I did, and now there's the double
whammy of "he's not around any more" and "he certainly
wouldn't work for what we're paying." Of course, both
of these are partially at least based on fact.

Jack's maple nut cocktail
cat: booze
servings: 1

1 1/2 oz Jack Daniel
1/2 oz hazelnut liqueur (or other nut liqueur)
1/2 oz maple syrup

Shake with ice and strain into rocks glass with
ice. Garnish with lemon wedge.
