We picked up Dave, the first violist, and off we went
to the concert, which every year causes havoc for
parkers in Cambridge, so we snagged a place 3 blocks
away. Walking to the church we found half a dozen more
spots, some as close as a block; Dave and Link were all
for running back to the car and getting a near spot,
but I pointed out that it would involve almost as much
walking to do this anyhow, plus we should leave the
good spots for the lame and halt.

The concert seems to have gone okay. I had a couple tiny
solos made tinier by the conductor shushing me to make
me next to inaudible. I suspect that the assistant
concertmaster, who is his friend, really wants my job,
and if I liked him any better and thought he could do
the job, which he can't do, I'd cede it right away.

Armenian pastries at the reception afterward - I had a
pistachio minibaklawa and a walnut one, both good.

Dropped Dave off and socialized with him and his wife
for a while, then eventually it was time for a latish
supper. We decided on that vegetarian haven Redbones,
which along with the East Coast Grill, which started
two years earlier, was the beginning of barbecue awareness
in the northeast. There was a wait in the restaurant, so
Link and I decided to eat downstairs in the bar, which
offers cutish but butch bartenders pulling 50 or so taps
and the full restaurant menu.

Good though sweetish in the New England style cornbread
comes to start.

My half liter of Berkshire coffee stout was rich, dark,
and savory but with a substantial caffeine kick; I got
Link a liter of Opa Opa IPA with the understanding that
I get part of it (I ended up with half) - this was a
moderately bitter very floral and grapefruitty drink,
very much like the Ipswich Harvest Ale that I'd had
earlier. For dinner my vegetarian friend got the pulled
pork platter with beans and slaw. The pork was nicely
done but not fatty enough (6 oz of lean shreds tossed
in a slightly too ketchupy sauce, ordinary cole slaw,
and very nice not too sweet rather smoky beans). I
didn't care to mess with the sides, so I asked for a
pound of brisket, extra fatty; this came mostly extra
fatty and very good - I ate the fattier half and left
the rest for Link's lunch the next day. A pound of meat
costs around the same as a pound and a quarter of mixed
meat and vegetables, think about that sometime. I
recommend doing what I did. I neglected to ask for any
kind of sauce, which is fine, as I don't care for sauce
unless it is cumin, hot pepper, and vinegar. It was
essentially the same meal I have usually had here
between 1987, when the place opened, and when I last
came here maybe 5 or 10 years ago (I don't get up into
these parts very often).

The bill was hefty but considering where we were about
average ($50 for two).
