We finally got one for the kid after a collision in which he slid gently
off the front seat where he was lying... only had a few scrapes, but it
was enough to convince us that it might be a good idea after all.  It
wouldn't pass muster with today's standards, though...  I think he was
about 6 months old at the time.  :)

I'm sure that Daddy's "traveling dormitory" wouldn't pass muster today,
either...  For one cross-country trip, he took the middle seat out of
the VW microbus and installed a bunkbed that used a crib mattress on the
bottom and a army cot mattress on the top.  The top extended over the
back seat, the bottom went from the back of the front seat to the edge
of the back seat.  Then he put two trunks full of all the clothes etc on
the floor next to the bunkbed, and covered that with another crib
mattress.  That filled the space from the bunk to the side door..  :) 
The baby had it best... a portacrib tucked over the engine behind the
back seat...  :)  During the day, we'd be sitting on the surfaces, at
night, one adult and all but one child would be sleeping on them, and
the other adult and the last child would be in front, as driver and
navigator respectively..  :)

I think that the one we used for our kid was the one that most (maybe
all?) of my siblings used over the years...  As my youngest brother was
only 9 when my kid was born, it hadn't been disposed of yet...  ;) 
Funny thing... none of them ever got their heads caught between those
dangerous slats... ;>
