The Welcome Home Michael dinner. Annie shows her affection, as
many of us do, with food. This is what we had:

for me: a 2 1/4 lb rib roast, rare;
for Billy: a 2 1/2 lb rib roast, medium rare;
for her: a 4 lb lobster.

I broiled the rib roasts like steaks; the lob was steamed in
the usual manner. By dint of guesswork I managed to get the
timings mostly right - I would rather my meal had been cooked
1-2 minutes less, but they were happy with theirs.

Annie now saves the fat from each roast to make Yorkshire
pudding for the successive roast; somewhere in the past she
made a batch with butter so manages to stay one roast ahead.
It was somehow the best Yorkshire I've ever had - a confluence
of factors, I had a 3x3" slice, about all I can handle of this
kind of food and then took another nibble. As a result, and
because she gave me the body of the lobster to pick at and for
the abundant and wonderful tomalley, I ate less than half of
my roast/steak, engendering questions about how I was feeling.
Billy managed to down a pound and half of meat, leaving not
very much; Annie left about 10 oz of tail and claw meat for
later. There's not much hunger in this house. Nor vegetables.

A quiet day.

Breakfast involved the unveiling of the Clean-Dave-made bacon.
While I was involved in this, Cousin Mike came over for toast,
bringing a Christmas present of a case of Leinies. He was
easily convinced to stay. He's a cousin to Dan and Charlie,
who come over periodically to get fed and watered; they're
from the first family of the town and have the luxury and
confidence to just drop by anytime just because. Apparently,
Charlie is the only one in that generation who works; and
of the next generation nobody does. That's what trust funds
will do for you, I guess - provide a subsistence, and if
one needs any extra dough, that's what wives are for.

Annie had got a butterflied leg of lamb just because (they
are not hurting for money, but I feel that because Billy's
pension is not inexhaustible, they should be just a tad more
careful with the spending), and it was aching to get used, so
I made pan-broiled lamb, sunny-side eggs, and toast, served
with beer. Mike after all came for toast, which for him means
"cheers!" Old joke. The lamb was done perfectly of course,
with a rub of tiny bits of salt, pepper, sugar, and thyme
(I easily tire of the pine needle herb).

I attempted to do some work, but as breakfast didn't end
until 3, that didn't really happen, as dinner was soon:
hamburgers, two 10 ouncers each, rare rare in fact too rare
for me, medium-rare otherwise. Followed by the relatively
fabulous James Beard's fabulous nut cake, as interpreted
by Annie (recipe was in a previous post).
