The winds were high enough here on that evening that the "official" fireworks
show was cancelled by the operator, Carl "Boom Boom" Steinmacher. Sure didn't
stop the "private" and individual whiz-bangs, though. And someone close by has
a shotgun with the plug out - I heard six rapid-fire shotgun blasts. There is
supposed to be a limit of three round capability for such.

I don't really understand all the hoo-hah ... unless it's to say "hooray, we
didn't kill ourselves off last year".  <shrug>  Just another day as far as I
can see. I don't even care about the parades and football. Just more bread and
circuses.

True enough ... but, it's the most common name for the dish. The Oxford English
Dictionary's first reference to the dish is from Frederick Law Olmsted's 19th
century travelogue, A Journey in the Seaboard Slave States. "The greatest
luxury with which they are acquainted is a stew of bacon and peas, with red
pepper, which they call 'Hopping John'." There is also a recipe for Hopping
John in The Carolina Housewife by Sarah Rutledge, which was published in 1847.

Leftover "Hoppin' John" is called "Skippin' Jenny," and further demonstrates
one's frugality, bringing a hope for an even better chance of prosperity in the
New Year.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Hoppin' Juan
 Categories: Beans, Rice, Latino, Chilies
      Yield: 6 servings

  1 1/2 c  Uncooked brown rice
    1/2 c  Dried black beans; cooked
      1 lg Onion; chopped
      3 lg Fresh jalapenos; seeded,
           - fine chopped
      3 cl Garlic; minced
           Salt
      4 c  White cheese; shredded,
           - divided *
    1/2 lb Ricotta cheese
      2 tb Milk

  Cook brown rice according to package directions.

  Preheat oven to 350øF/175øC.

  In a large bowl combine rice, black beans, onion,
  jalapeno peppers, garlic and salt; mix well.

  In a medium bowl combine 3 cups white cheese, ricotta
  cheese and milk; mix well.

  In a large casserole layer rice mixture and ricotta
  mixture alternately until all ingredients are used,
  ending with rice mixture.

  Bake for 25 minutes.

  Sprinkle with remaining 1 cup white cheese.

  Bake for 5 minutes longer.

  * Use Manchego-style, Asadero, Queso Blanco, Anejo
  Enchilado, mozzarella or Jack/Pepper-Jack cheese.
