We survived nicely on leftovers and some Chinese takeout until the
29th when we set off for PR again. Roslind and Neekha were texting
back and forth constantly from our different highways as we
converged. We arrived an hour before Ray's mob did, quickly texted
him to buy some milk enroute and started supper for them.

Soon after arrival, Becca's kids started calling us Grandma and
Papa Jim and crawling into our laps for hugs and cuddles which
pleased us both. They were off to their father's place the next day
so we didn't have a lot of time with them but that was OK as we
could spend even more time with Neekha.

The next day I helped Ray process a deer he had shot, quartered and
frozen earlier on. He did the heavy butchering while I manned a meat
grinder. It was manual, rum powered grinder. When he was sorting the
trimmings into a pile of primer bits for stir fries and another pile
destined for burgers, I came across the odd piece in my pile that
looked pretty prime with just a wee bit of further trimming and
nibbled on about half a pound of raw meat as I worked.

He complained that he was eating so much mule deer, whitetail, moose
and bison that he really missed pork (although not beef). That tied
in nicely with my plans as I was making a side trip to the nearby
town of Grimshaw to visit a most excellent butcher shop and smoke
house. I proposed getting him a large shopping bag of various cuts
of pigmeat and then trading him for some game pound for pound.

So I got us each a pork butt roast, a smoked shoulder, a five pound
box of boneless chops, some smoked chops, neck bacon, a ham roll,
pepperoni, some head cheese, and a variety of housemade sausages:
maple-fennel, Italian hot and breakfast with double sage.

Then I swapped his bag for a sack of assorted bison, elk, deer and
moose cuts ranging from soup bones, stew meat and burger to steaks
and roasts including a bison heart and two moose kidneys plus two
rabbits and four old stewing hens (from Neekha's first brood).

On New Year's Eve I did up what turned out to be an amazing bison
neck roast in the slow cooker with onions and tomatoes. And on New
Year's day Becca made some wonderful breaded and baked halibut balls
from fish caught and flash frozen on board by Raine's dad last
summer. So again we ate well.

On Jan. 2 Roslind lead Neekha and a school friend of hers on a
baking bonanza making bread, buns, fry bread (AKA dough gods and
rather similar to Chuck's "doughnuts" but topped with butter and
maple syrup instead of cinnamon and sugar) while I converted the
leftover buffalo neck into soup.

We hit the road on the 3rd leaving quite early so we hit HL well
before lunch and found the French place closed until noon, so we had
a large and filling but very mediocre breakfast nearby; we should
have gone to McDonald's for a sausage and egg biscuit! We were still
full when we hit FP so we only had coffee at the truck stop. And
that ends this trip's meal log, except to say that I had roast bison
heart for supper last night and it was way good.
