I have only had a kidney stone once. But, like most things in my life - it was
a non-standard experience. The thing was big enough it could not begin to pass
down the ureter. So it just blocked things off, making me a sick puppy. They
had to place in internal catheter to allow waste fluids to pass to the bladder.
Then a trip to have the thing hydro shocked into submission.

But, it didn't give up that easily. Only about half of it went away, leaving a
hard-core that was still too large to pass naturally. So, they knocked me out
and, as far as I know, sent a little robot guy up to jackhammer the stone into
tiny pieces, use his end-loader to put it into a LeTourneau mine dump and cart
it away. 

The pain was never bad. More like a constant dull ache. But, not something I
care to go through again. I asked of my Urologist how to avoid a return bout
and, as I was already doing most of what he recommended, am hoping it works
out.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06
 
      Title: Mushroom & Kidney Soup
 Categories: Beef, Offal, Soups, Mushrooms, Rice
      Yield: 6 Servings
 
      1    Ox kidney
      2 qt Stock
      1 oz Flour
      1 oz Dripping
      1 lg Onion
      1 ts Salt
      1 ts Mustard
      1 ts Granulated sugar
      1 tb Rice
        ds Pepper
    1/2 lb Mushrooms
 
  Soak the kidney in warm salted water for 30 mins. Wash the
  mushrooms, peel and cut into pieces, chop the stalks finely.
  Cut the kidney into small pieces, removing the hard core and
  fat. Peel and chop the onion.
  
  Heat the fat in a big saucepan and fry the onion and kidney
  and mushrooms for five mins, turning to cook evenly. Push to
  one side and stir in the flour and seasonings, then stir in
  half the stock and stir until it boils.
  
  Cover and simmer gently for 3/4 hour, then add the well
  washed rice and remainder of stock. Continue to simmer
  gently for 12-15 mins more or until rice is tender.
  
  Skim if necessary and serve.
