-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> In my experience, mainly yesteryear in Kiwiland, is that cheeseries
GJ> are not usually odiforous. I visited several cheese vendors, and also

ML> They smell like milk, as I recall. Nauseating.

You are subjectively biased. I have always liked the smell of milk,
since the day I was born.

GJ> a small cheese maker, and apart from the expected comfortable aroma of
GJ> mature loveliness from the finished cheeses, there was nothing at all
GJ> outstanding. If there was an unpleasant smell, it would be indicative
GJ> of something gone seriously wrong.

ML> What went wrong is that the bovines were put to the wrong
ML> use in the first place.

You can chomp your way through the males and eunichs, while I savour
the product of the generosity of the females.

GJ> There has been a kerfuffle here recently about mushrooms, as several
GJ> members of a Vietnamese family were poisoned by "Death Cap" mushrooms.
GJ> So far 2 have died, one recovered, and one in the balance. It seems
GJ> that they are superficially very similar to common edible varieties.

ML> A. phalloides is distinctive in many ways, and one would have
ML> to be very hungry indeed to mistake it for an edible genus.
ML> 1. it has a frilly petticoat thing around the stem. This
ML> sometimes washes off in the rain, though.
ML> 2. it has an egg-shaped base. This is universal and invariant.
ML> 3. its shape clearly puts it in league with other Amanitas, but
ML> it looks quite different from true agarics.

Further to that, later information was that the people who were
poisoned were not Vietnamese, but were relatives of the Chinese chef
of a restaurant who put on a private party for them, using mushrooms
that one of them had gathered locally. From what I have read, the
Death Caps are not native to Australia or Asia, and so were not
recognised as poisonous. The manager of the restaurant was at pains
to point out that none of the poison was fed to paying customers, but
I doubt if he will be able to keep his usual clientele, particularly
as he now has to find another chef...

GJ> Don't forget the Scottish Scone - the village where Robert the Bruce
GJ> was crowned king of Scotland on 27th March, 1306.

ML> I thought the stone of scone referred to the texture of the
 ML> baked good.

Only if you are backward in your reading.

The history of the Stone of Scone makes fascinating reading. Legend
has it that it was Jacob's pillow when he saw the angels. Later it
travelled around, was use to crown Irish kings in 700BC, then captured
by the Scots and used similarly. Edward I took it to Westminster,
where, apart from when it was stolen by Scottish nationalists for a
few months in 1950, it remained until St Adrew's Day, 15th November
1996, when it was handed over at the border, with great ceremony,
Prince Andrew presiding. It now stays with the Scottish Crown Jewels
in Edinburgh Castle, but arrangements have been made to borrow it for
future coronations in Westminster.

DD> Round-shaped British scones can resemble North American biscuits in
 DD> appearance,
DD> but scones rely on cold butter for their delicate, flaky texture,
GJ> Not flaky! Soft, and light, with a slight crust.

ML> Your (or Brit) scones aren't flaky. US scones are not delicate,
ML> flaky, soft, light, or edible.

I will take your word for it.

GJ> Vale Ronald Searle, patron of St Trinians college for girls.

 ML> More details?

Dave D graciously provided same. I somehow thought he would.
