Ärende: sour grapes?
====================
Hi Mike,

 > He never made wine but I guess he was ahead of his time with ice
 > raisins. (G)

MR> I would think that would be the norm. The New Grapes for the Ice Wine
MR> are probably a bit more hearty and tolerant to frost and cold.

Probably. The growing season in the Catskills is rather short; I suspect
his grapes never had the chance to reach their full potential before the
frosts hit.

 > Need an upgrade? How many gigs?

MR> Hehehheh, a terabyte may be nice for starters.

Actually, if I could wipe some things out of the memory and bring back
some of what I've forgotten, an upgrade might not be neccessary.

 > Most things, fresh picked are. It's the time involved getting them to
 > the proccessor and the proccessing involved that degrades the taste.

MR> Once worked at Birds Eye, and I was impressed with their efforts. In
MR> the Summer the goal was to get the corn picked, sorted and processed
MR> and frozen within 1 hour of picking. This kept the corn very sweet and

That is impressive. They must have had field not too far from the
proccessing plant to have a goal like that. Since it does take time to
pick the corn and get it to the plant, I imagine some of it might have
been a bit over the hour limit if the fields were any sort of distance
away.

MR> good. One good perk You had while working at that job ( this was
MR> packaging of those little ears ) On lunch or break You could walk over
MR> and grab an ear or two right out of the boiler. It was so hot and
MR> sweet. You really did not need butter. But a little Butter salt and

Probably couldn't do that now; OSHA would be all over the owners. My
dad used to not pick corn until the water was on the stove so I know how
good fresh corn is. I was a bit disappointed the first time I went to a
farm stand in NC after getting married the fall before and finding out
the corn was picked that morning. (G)

MR> You had it made.. After the corn was cooked in the processing. It was
MR> flash frozen in less than 10 minutes, then sent off to the store. I
MR> was very impressed with the quickness of the whole thing in order to
MR> preserve the best taste of the Corn. Don't know if it is so with the
MR> rest of the veggies they did.

I suspect they did it with all their veggies. I don't use too much corn
any more; Steve has noticed that he gets migraines from it. He got the
aura of one this past July after having just one and a quarter ears.
So, much as we both like corn on the cob, I don't want to eat it in
front of him. The amount of corn I put in chili seems to be OK but I
don't buy corn tortillas and go easy on corn chips. Don't want him
floored by a migraine with the intensity of his studies.

 > mush. Given a choice tho, I would rather grow my own than have frozen.
 > But, that's why we like the farmer's market. (G)

MR> I with You! Great time of year for veggies!

Yes, we see the progress week to week of what's in season. The local
farmer's market operates weekly from April to November, then once a
month from December to March. We've bought lots of good eats there over
the past 17 months (since we moved to Wake Forest).

 > MR> Unfortuneatly Ruth, they don't have Annis's there anymore. I think

 > If I recall rightly, the dairy was right there and the ice cream shop
 > was a store front part of the dairy set up. My mom spent several

MR> Yeah, thats how I remember it too. Nice little store out front with
MR> the dairy process in the back. I believe also there were several
MR> stores/dairies, But Avon became the central and I believe last to
MR> survive until the end. Sad.. I am surprised. The area is rich in Dairy
MR> farms, but I guess even they are not doing to well these days, at
 MR> least here in NY.

They seem to have lasted longer in western NY as opposed to the eastern
part of the state. A lot of the eastern ones closed in the 60s and 70s.

 > Ever go thru Houghton? I went to college there.

MR> Yes, such a beautiful area. I love that part of the state.

I like the mountains, especially this time of year. My dad wrote tho
that the leaves will probably peak this week end. I guess lack of rain
is making them die earlier; we've noticed that around here too. Ours
won't peak for a while yet but we won't have the color we did last year.

 > OTOH, I had knee surgery in Cuba; the orthopedic doctor was from Olean.

MR> Then the Memories are not as fond then :)

Can't do much, confined to the hospital for 10 days. This was pre
arthroscopic surgery days and I'd damaged the knee quite extensively.
The ortho doctor said it was worse than Joe Namath's knee injury.

 > Follow up appointments were in Olean & I went there with a friend a few
 > times.

MR> Cattaruagus County is my Favorite. Olean has changed a lot since good
MR> ol walmart moved in. I can see how some of these small towns across
MR> the country complain about walmart. Since coming in, they definitly
 MR> changed the
MR> complexion of that town. Probably for the good though, for the people
MR> who live there and go to College there.

We've noticed the changes here & there. Trying to get Route 17 made
into Interstate 86 has been interesting to see over the years. That,
and other major roads that have been built since we left the area have
definately changed the ways we go, either to my parents or Steve's
family. And yes, W-M is changing the buying patterns of the local
people; I think mostly in those that sell groceries. Before W-M they had
Ames or Big N or WT Grants or similar, and local grocery stores. Now
they're very often combined into one and the local groceries that are
still around (usually in small towns) have a hard time competing.

 > Next spring?

 MR> heheheh, we'll see.. ;-)

Start the planning now; 6 months from now, sapping and syrup season will
be just about, if not all, done.
