====================================================================
Hi Dave,

DD> enough (and more) people on this old spitball anyway. However, we are
DD> supposed to protect children and not cause them harm.

RH> Sad to say, after all their upbrining, our girls buy a lot of things
RH> with HFCS in them. Rachel is a label reader but haven't convinced her
RH> to put things back that have the HFCS in them. Deborah is beginning to
RH> read labels but hasn't made the mental change to avoid the HFCS yet.
RH> Maybe as Logan eats more solids.................................

DD> Perhaps Mom ought to hammer on them with the "You do what you want for
DD> yourself. But, don't you dare feed that poison to *MY*
 DD> grandchildren!!!"

A bit hard to enforce since they're in NV & AZ and I'm in NC. However,
time's I'm out there or they're here, I can encourage healthier eating.
Both girls are using whole wheat pasta (Rachel isn't quite all the time
but more so than she was.) by choice. They both went on a spree of using
white (Rachel did at David's request.) once they moved out of the house
but now have gone back to the pasta they were raised on. Rice is still
sometimes brown, sometimes white deal with them.

DD> I have always preferred rhubarb and mince pies over all others.

RH> I like them too, and will go for them in the same order. (G)

DD> IOW you like your Hershey bars straight. Not with almonds. And no
 DD> Nestle' Crunch, either.

RH> I like the crunch bars; the rice is more innocuous than nuts. I'd
RH> rather have the Ritter Sport bittersweet with mint creme filling or a
 RH> Milky way tho.

DD> I'm not a candy bar person. Except, once in a while a Bart Simpson bar
DD> (Butterfinger). But, since I am diabetic I ain't s'posed to be fooling

OTOH, I don't do peanut butter but really enjoy a chocolate/carmel combo
for a generic candy bar. Those I'll eat all in one serving; dark
chocolate gets rationed bit by bit.

DD> around with that stuff anyway. I prefer to save my "sins" for
 DD> something I like better.

I can see your point there. I don't have to watch my sugar as close as
you do (but probably should).

DD> Ritter Sport sounds European. I can't recall seeing it or hearing it
 DD> advertised around here.

They are German, not advertised on tv over here. Some print media but
not very often. Your best bet to find it would be to go to a good
grocery store. I can't remember if Aldi's carries them or not. Sometimes
you can get a little sample pack of about 8 different ones bundled
together. Those come as a 4 square (2x2) bar; the full bars are a 4x4
set. Mosey down the candy aisle of a bigger chain store or an upscale
grocery store and you'ld probably find it.

DD> Title: Green Tomato Mincemeat *
DD> Categories: Desserts, Preserving, Vegetables, Citrus
 DD> Yield: 3 Quarts

RH> Close to, but not quite the same as what I've made before. My recipe
RH> (from my MIL) calls for suet; that was harder' anything to find in AZ
RH> some 20 years or so ago when I made it. I think I just subbed a bit of
RH> beef fat in its place finally.

DD> It's all tallow. Suet is just the shortened form of "kidney suet". I
DD> have seen suet in some markets with a suspicious amount of red meat on
DD> some of the pellets and a more yellowish tinge than "real" suet from
DD> near the kidneys. It is often labelled as "suet for birds/bird food".

DD> If one feeds it to the birds then it makes no never minds. Except I
DD> believe in truth in labelling. If it's for birds it should be either
DD> labelled accurately or marked "NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION". But, that's
DD> just my take on it. I am very tolerant on some things and surprisingly
 DD> prissy on others. Bv)=

I'll be picky about some things too, but willing to grant a bit of
leeway on others. Don't want to know what parts of the pig go into
scrapple, jut that it contains pork. OTOH, I'll want to know more about
my sausage.

DD> In the recipe below I mention my Grandmother's "Mary Dunbar" cooker.
DD> Figuring a picture is worth a thousand words (at least) I went and

I'll have to check it out.

DD> found the very item for sale on E-Bay. Talk about a trip down memory
DD> lane. I may bid on that bad boy -- but, then again, I have enough
DD> clutter in my kitchen and my practicality gene is over-riding my
 DD> remebory urge.

Your choice. (G) Depends on how much you think you would use it or if
you would keep it for the sentimental value more. If the latter, not
worth it until you get a bigger place. The former, go for it.

DD> Grandmother used actual brandy in the hard sauce
DD> although she was a teetotaler otherwise. I asked her
