Quite an improvement, actually. Losing one's mind and having
it hurt a lot are quite different issues. Not minimizing the
suffering from hurting a lot, of course.

Part of the fun of the game is the nature of translators and
their tendency to ignore or misinterpret idioms, partially
because of the different ways that languages use articles,
and partially because a word for word translation doesn't
work past a certain point. Speaking of minds, one of the
old jokes referenced a Russian-English translating machine
that was supposed to be a fallback when a human interpreter
was unavailable, and 24-hour service was important back in
the cold war. The joke goes that someone fed "out of sight,
out of mind" in and had it translated into Russian and back,
and what came out was "invisible, insane." So people have
been using this phrase to test translating services, algorithms,
what have you. For your edification, I took the phrase and
subjected it to successive translations; the results were
disappointing if one stayed within the bounds of white folks'
languages, with only a few oddities, such as the French
rendering Hors de vue, hors de l'esprit, which doesn't make
sense in French (as mind in this case refers more to memoire
than esprit) but translates back, word for word, as "out of
sight, out of (the) mind." When one gets out of the
Indoeuropean, especially alternating among Chinese, Armenian,
and Turkish, strange things happen. A couple sets of
proceedings yielded "Twice in the mind" and "Jews out of sight
out of mind"; how the Jews got there I have no idea.

By the way, when one types the phrase in English into
Google Translate, the suggestion is made: "Did you mean:
outta sight, outta mind?"

MIDIA DOLMA (STUFFED MUSSEL DELIGHT)
cat: middle east, shellfish, main
serves: 4 to 6

2 lb mussels
1/2 c white wine
2 Tb olive oil
1 c chopped onion
1/2 c uncooked rice
1/4 c chopped pine nuts
1 c unsalted chicken broth
mussel broth
1/3 c currants
1/2 ts cinnamon
salt and pepper to taste
2 Tb chopped fresh parsley
sliced lemon for garnish

Steam mussels in wine, covered, until shells open. Remove
from heat and let cool. Strain and reserve broth. In
separate saucepan, heat olive oil and saute onion until
tender. Add rice and pine nuts and saute 3-5 min. Stir in
chicken broth, reserved mussel broth, and remaining
ingredients (except parsley). Cover and simmer for 35 min
or until rice is tender but still firm. Blend in chopped
parsley. Spoon onto half shells and chill. Garnish with
lemon wedges.
