-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

ML> In this case, the mycelia of the fungus were no doubt
ML> entwined in the rootstocks of hardwood trees imported
ML> first into North America and then places like Australasia.
GJ> Probably way back before AQIS was formed to police our ports of entry
GJ> of possible foreign pathogens. That the lethal fungi were found near
GJ> Canberra, where most embassies are located may be significant.

ML> If the ambassadors were to blame, the fungi would have
ML> been found along the new constructions of their quarters.

My thoughts were that the fungi may have come in on cargoes with
diplomatic immunity, and thus avoided the usual Quarantine inspection
procedure. (Visions of ambassadors dancing among the woods, gaily
scattering their spores to the winds...)

ML> Lighters have been banned airside for quite a number of years.
ML> In this particular case, having a vested interest in prevention
ML> of air cabin fires, I hope that the perp, even though a nobs'
ML> class fat cat, is prosecuted to the fullest extent.
GJ> One wonders at the security at Narita if it failed to pick up that
GJ> lighter. Perhaps not enough metal in it? What will be the outcome?
GJ> I have heard nothing here, have you?

ML> Apparently not newsworthy. Pity, as the owner of the lighter
ML> should be prosecuted - as should the security officials who
 ML> missed it.

I would have thought such a matter would have been extremely
newsworthy, as it resulted in a flight being turned back and a lot of
people being very, very upset. Something that you or I would not like
to happen on any of our flights.

GJ> That is what I would have done, but from reports by passengers, the
GJ> crew was useless, and passengers were told to stay in their cabins,
GJ> until it was too late for some. According to one Australian, the
GJ> Americans mostly dived off the ship and swam to shore, while the
GJ> Italians screamed and panicked. She managed to get into one of the
GJ> few life-boats that got away.
ML> Okay, it might have been difficult to climb about on a craft
ML> that had fallen on its side, but certainly it would be worth the
ML> effort to at least get up above the waterline. There are claims
ML> that the crew lied to the passengers about it being a mere
ML> "technical fault" and told them to remain in their cabins; that
ML> questionable advice complicates the scenario.

There was a video shown on our TV that someone took of a female
officer saying just that. And one of the drowned passengers was not
official, but just happened to be "accompanying" one of the crew.
All in all, a sorry state of affairs.

      Title: Italian-Style Fish
Categories: Mushrooms, Vegetables, Cheese, Pasta, Fish
      Yield: 6 Servings

  1 1/2 lb White-fleshed fish filets;
           - 1/2" - 1" thick
    1/4 ts Salt
    1/8 ts Black pepper
      2 c Sliced fresh mushrooms
      1 tb Cooking oil
 14 1/2 oz Can Italian-style stewed
           - tomatoes; undrained
10 3/4 oz Can condensed tomato bisque
           - soup
    1/8 ts Black pepper
4 1/2 c Hot cooked linguine or other
           - pasta
    1/3 c Fine shredded Parmesan
           - cheese

Thaw fish, if frozen. Preheat broiler. Rinse fish; pat dry with paper
towels. If necessary, cut fish into six serving-size pieces. Measure
thickness of fish. Place fish on the greased unheated rack of a
broiler pan. Turn any thin portions under to make uniform thickness.
Sprinkle with salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Broil about 4 inches from
the heat just until fish flakes easily when tested with a fork. Allow
4 to 6 minutes per 1/2-inch thickness of fish. (If filets are 1 inch
thick or more, turn once halfway through broiling.) Meanwhile, for
sauce, in a medium saucepan cook mushrooms in hot oil until tender.
Stir in undrained tomatoes, tomato bisque soup, and 1/8 teaspoon
pepper. Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture is heated
through. Spoon pasta onto plates; top with some of the sauce, fish
fillets, and remaining sauce. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Makes 6
