I think I mentioned before that she will complete her Master of
Science degree in psychology by the end of Feb. Well she has already
received two unsolicited job offers and a raise! The referral
company she works for is increasing her counselling rates (and
sending her more difficult cases) effective March 1. A second
company wants to start sending her referrals as well. Plus Health
Canada want her to travel to Kugluktuk (formerly Coppermine) up on
the Arctic Ocean coast for one week per month, all expenses paid and
at a very high hourly rate.

She's up there right now on a four day orientation. When asked about
meditation therapy she had said she used several techniques but had
only read about Transcendental Meditation. It seems the people in
Ottawa think so highly of TM when dealing with residential school
survivors that they sent a training team to Kugluktuk to run a
workshop and invited her to attend on their dime. So she is being
paid to go to a class and not even work this trip!

On a food note she talked to her new coordinator, the nurse and the
social worker there and asked them what to bring up. So she took a
large beer cooler full of chocolate truffles, avocados and kiwifruit
with her as gifts. Lettuce is $6 a head and milk is $8 a jug up
there at the general store and a lot of people eat whale and seal
meat daily. Avocados and kiwifruit are never seen there.

Her choices for meals and accommodations were:

Enokhok Inn, six rooms, very basic, $243 per night, double occupancy
when busy, "restaurant" is for guests only and is open 3 hours a day
for 3 meals, with a single meal menu per day, no choices).

Coppermine Inn, 11 rooms, double occupancy when busy, again
restaurant for guests only.

Coronation Restaurant & Catering Ltd. The only public eatery. It
specializes in camp catering services, take out and baked goods.

Co-op Coffee Shop, operated by Kugluktuk Co-op
 
Bars: none. It is a dry community and bootleggers charge $100 per
bottle for spirits.

She emailed me today to say both the small hotels there double
booked all their rooms because of the workshop, so she is sharing a
room with another lady.  

Like I said the hotel restaurant serves one daily special, no
choices. (Hey, it works for Thomas Keller and Ferran Adria.) There
is no waitstaff. Platters and serving bowls are brought out by the
cook and passed around family style by the guests and you take as
big a portion as you please. It seems that some of the visiting
Ottawa people who have never been further north than their summer
cottage their whole life and who are vegetarians and even vegans are
in absolute distress!

That beer cooler should be full of Arctic char when she returns
Tuesday. If it isn't I'm sending her back! [g]
