====================================================================
Bonjour Ruth!

-> ->  HN> I'm often in a quandary about those silly
-> -> HN> readings. However mashed potatoes seem to
-> -> HN> spike me pretty well. Most places we eat
->
-> -> I think they probably spike a lot of people--all those carbs, butter,
-> -> milk................but with my mom, mashed potatoes are a staple
part
-> -> of her diet. She tends to get high readings but a good bit of that is
-> -> due to her not following a good diet. We've not been up there since
->
-> HN> I try to avoid the taters as much
->  HN> as I can..and I dearly love 'em! But
-> HN> I'm trying to keep the blood sugars
->  HN> under control, last A1C was 6.1 which
-> HN> pleased the doc quite a bit. Just had
-> HN> a huge battery of blood work done and
-> HN> urine samples to check kindey function as
->  HN> well.
->
-> Hopefully all numbers will look good to you and the doctor. We went for
-> years without eating a lot of potatoes but picked up the amount when the
-> girls were growing up. Then we dropped back to almost none while we were
-> in HI. Now we go thru a 5 pound bag every couple of months or so; we
-> still use a lot of alternatives but do eat more potatoes than we used
-> to.
->
Numbers DID look good, although he
says I am slightly anemic (?!) as
my hemoglobin was at the low end of
normal. As for Potatoes, I simply
love em..chips, fries, baked, mashed
scalloped, roasted..does not matter
I love em...however I realize they
Love ME a little TOO much...so I
now have them rarely. Have not bought
a bag of potatoes in ages!

-> -> HN> offer brown rice as well as plain white..and
->  HN> ->
-> -> You're more "big city" than we are. (G)
->  HN> ->
-> HN> And I can be in real wilderness faster than you
->  HN> too! (grin)
->
-> Probably so, tho I've not looked at a map. There are a few desolare
-> places here in the state but the number is diminishing. OTOH, if we were
-> in AZ, there are still a lot of places with nothing but cactus, mesquite
-> and some nasty critters.
->
I can be in total wild in less than
an hour. Which can be a problem for
many as they go off into the wild as
if it were just a jaunt down the block
and as ill prepared too!

-> -> HN> a couple even offer red rice. At home we
-> -> HN> have red rice and brown...no white at all.
->  HN> ->
-> -> We've got the brown in long & short grain, brown basmati and the rice
-> -> blend. Also have some wild "rice" and several boxes of various grain
-> -> mixes put out by Seeds of Change. I used one of them as part of
supper
-> -> last night, may use the left over as part of a loaf of bread.
->
-> HN> As far as breads go, I have
->  HN> whole wheat crumpets for tomorrow's
-> HN> breakfast (poached eggs on toasted
->
-> Sounds good; I've got some english muffins in the freezer I ought to
-> pull out for something similar. I made 2 beautiful looking loaves of
-> bread today using a cup of the leftover grain mix. Between those,
-> several kinds of crackers, other breads, pastas, etc, we've got a lot
-> of carbs in the house.
->
Have you ever made bread with
sprouting grain? I see it at the
health food store quite often. High
on the carbs though. I have found a new
pasta that we really like; Dreamfields,
it has a 65% lower glycemic index than
regular and tastes better than whole
wheat.
->
-> HN> crumpets) and some high fiber english
->  HN> muffins...and that's it, no crackers
-> HN> or bread at all. Do have cheerios
->  HN> though!
->
-> -> HN> it, it's all on the green grass!
->
-> -> Do you mow year round? I know Steve appreciates the winter break from
-> -> mowing. Here he usually starts in late March/early April and does the
-> -> last one of the season in late September/early October.
->
-> HN> During the winter the grass stays green,
->  HN> but doesn't grow much..so mowing is
-> HN> usually mid march to late September.
->
-> I see a lot of brown but some patches of green around here right now.
->
Everyone around here
has green grass currently.
Plenty of natural watering going
on!
->
-> HN> Our grass (if it did not get regular
-> HN> watering) turns brown in the dry
->  HN> summer heat.
->
-> Sounds like AZ but they get summer monsoons to help green it up. Most of
-> the year, if not watered, the grass would be brown.
->
Mostly because it should not
be there in the first place!
First time I went though AZ
in the 50's I don't even
remember seeing any grass.
No..wait, I DO! It was at
the Motel one night when we
stopped...there was a strip of
grass just in front of the
office, with roses...

-> -> Can't do much other. I've got my first class of the term tonight so
-> -> trying to do Fido now, got a chicken roasting in the oven and will
try
-> -> to get more sewing (dress for Audrey) in before supper.
->
->  HN> It's Friday evening
-> HN> and I took Annie out for
->  HN> a late lunch/early dinner when
->  HN> she got home from treatment..only
-> HN> 13 more treatments to go! Less than
->  HN> three weeks!!
->
-> Good to hear that the treatments are almost done! We went out last night
-> to the prime rib place, had the left overs for supper with some cleaning
-> out of odds & ends from the fridge to go with it.
->
Hormone therapy will begin after
radiation is done, but we have
not even had a meeting on that
regimen yet..

-> ->  HN> Attitude m'dear a good attitude
-> ->  HN> will carry you far!
->
-> -> Better a positive attitude than a negative one. IOW, better a Tigger
-> -> than an Eeore attitude. (G)
->
->  HN> Yep!
->
->
-> -> Steve has an appointment in Raleigh next week; I may go along and do
-> -> some shopping at Whole Foods Market. He needs peanut butter, likes
their
-> -> grind your own version. Doctor's office is a couple of miles further
-> -> down the same road, almost too convenient. We'll probably start
shopping
-> -> there a lot more often.
->
-> HN> There used to be a locally made
-> HN> Peanut butter (Sunny Jim) that was
-> HN> really good...but you had to mix
-> HN> it yourself as it was nothing but
-> HN> peanuts in it...so it separated and
-> HN> the top was all the peanut oil!
->
-> This stuff would if we didn't keep it in the fridge. We used to get some
-> (Laura Scudder? and other brands but not Sunny Jim) that did the same
-> thing. I'd let Steve be the muscle power to stir it up. One time he
-> snapped the handle on the rubber scraper he was using--didn't know his
-> own strength.
->
At a couple of the stores locally
you can "grind your own" peanut
butter. But most find you need
to add salt and sugar to it to
make it taste "right"...me I
like it just the way it is!
chat with you soon!
