-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

ML> I wonder if the incidence among echo folks is greater
ML> than in the general population.
GJ> Or are we just more open about it? Of course it would be nice to say
GJ> that it occurs more frequently among the intelligent/gifted/elite
GJ> (choose your adjective), ie "us" than the general poopulation.

ML> Or maybe there is substantial discussion as well within
ML> communities whose posts we don't read.

Possible, but not that I have noticed in general discussions. Perhaps
the groups here are more reticent about talking openly about the ills
their flesh is heir to.

I went to a funeral last Wednesday, and I noticed that almost everyone
there, including the deceased, were younger than me. I was pleased to
meet there a lady with whom I had had a passionate relationship about
37 years ago. She was still in very good condition, and friendly.

GJ> read, speak or remember words. I remember looking at a Euro banknote,
GJ> trying to work out what it was. I was terrified that I was having a
GJ> stroke, but somewhat relieved after it passed, and even more relieved
GJ> when I read that my symptoms were related to the migraine.

ML> Yes - a fairly common accompaniment of migraines. Scary, wasn't it.
ML> Of course, looking at a Euro note and not knowing what it is may
ML> soon be an everyday occurrence.

Not an experience I would like to have every day. Hopefully my
short-term memory will not get too much worse, too soon.

GJ> about it, but to try to avoid triggers such as flashing bright lights
 GJ> and stress.
 ML> And red wine.
GJ> No one has ever told me that, and if they did, I would not listen.

ML> An amusing account of an early experiment on the topic can be
 ML> had at www2.gi.alaska.edu/ScienceForum/ASF8/869.html -
ML> The test was carried out by dividing migraine sufferers whose
ML> attacks seemed to be triggered by red wine into two groups.
ML> Eleven were given a drink of red wine, while nine had a
ML> mixture of vodka and lemonade with the same amount of alcohol.
ML> The drinks were served very cold, out of dark bottles and drunk
ML> through dark straws, and while the people were told that the
ML> beverages might contain alcohol, none could guess successfully
ML> what they were drinking. (One person thought it was cough
ML> syrup!) Nine of the eleven people who drank the red wine
ML> developed migraine headaches, most within three hours, but
ML> none of the vodka-lemonade drinkers did. No one in another,
ML> control, group of people who did not normally have migraine
ML> headaches after drinking red wine had any problem (except
ML> inebriation) after drinking a similar amount of the wine.

I wonder how many of the first group were habitual red wine drinkers.

ML> Though it is peculiar that people could not tell the
ML> difference between red wine (or perhaps vodka lemonade)
 ML> and cough syrup.

Perhaps s/he was not familiar with the flavour of red wine and/or
cought syrup.

ML> almost full strength, and even if no, assuming my instrument
ML> was tuned properly, muscular memory would take care of almost
 ML> everything.
 GJ> Like touch-typing?
ML> More so than touch typing: I can adjust between two different
ML> sizes of viola or even between a viola and a violin within
ML> seconds. It's been several years, and I still can't get the
ML> hang of this laptop keyboard.

Can you touch-type on a proper, full-sized desktop keyboard? I can
use my 10 year old Compaq laptop keyboard, as it does have the
orienting nipples on the F and J keys. I would be hopelessly lost on
one of these new "virtual" keyboards that appear on a screen.

 ML> Jay McCarthy's Cactus Ritas
GJ> You forgot the most important part of dealing with those "tuna"
GJ> fruits; hold them with metal tongs until you burn the fine, almost
GJ> invisible spines off the outside, otherwise they will penetrate your
 GJ> skin, most uncomfortably.

ML> In the US, commercially available tunas have already been
 ML> heat treated.

Very wise. When I got some from a local green-grocer, who in turn had
got them from a local back-yard grower, I was warned about the spines.
In America I have only seen tuna in Mexican supermarkets, but I didn't
touch to test for spines.

The tuna I cooked didn't have much flavour.
