ML> There's nothing to prevent a terrorist getting on a plane, but
ML> the tools of the trade should be barred; most of them already
ML> are, so why not things that make fire?

Fair enough as regards carry-on articles, but what is done now to
prevent another Lockerbie style bang or a woomf, triggered by a timer
or a signal sent to checked luggage from a mobile phone operated by a
passenger or from the ground?

JW> BTW Roslind's flights in and out of Kug were on a First Air ATR42-300
JW> combi: 22 seats plus cargo. Their fleet are certified for cold
JW> weather operations to -54 C/ -65 F (they fly as far north as Resolute)

When boarding my ATR72-500 last year at Invercargill airport I was
surprised by the complete lack of security, but as you or Jim pointed
out, for purely domestic flights this is not necessary. Mt Cook
Airlines doesn't go anywhere except New Zealand.

ML> I have checked out flying to Resolute, but Longyearbyen is 4 degrees
ML> farther north and perhaps somewhat more temperate, also possible
ML> to get there using miles. I've been putting the farthest north and
ML> farthest south trips off until my financial circumstances allow for
ML> these indulgences (the extremes are major expensive, as you know),

Air NZ runs flights to extreme South - hopefully not hitting any more
mountains now. Who goes North? I would guess the Russkis.

ML> as that will ever happen. Plus checking bags, which I am allergic
ML> to, would be a necessity, which makes me wonder, what happens if
ML> they lose the bag that has my winter woollies in it?

Include a packet of frozen prawns, as that would bring it to the
attention of the airlines people after a couple of days.

JW> Being a northern regional flight with no national or international
JW> connections, she was able to bypass security and just followed a
JW> flight attendant out a side door of the terminal directly to the
 JW> plane.

Which is what I did in Invercargill. I only had to flash my boarding
pass.

ML> Why stop there - grocery stores. By the way, I checked the
ML> Web for symptoms of diabetes, and two are sudden weight
ML> gain and sudden weight loss. H'm. Those are coincidentally
 ML> also symptoms of cancer.

Do you have a blood glucose test kit? Kevin gave me his spare one,
and it is interesting to see how my sugar varies during the day and in
response to activities. I also use it to test wine, the lowest being
a rich shiraz, down to 1.8 mm/l.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: Blood And Sand
 Categories: Alcohol
      Yield: 1 Servings

      1 oz Blended scotch
      1 oz Fresh-squeezed orange juice
    3/4 oz Cherry brandy
    3/4 oz Sweet vermouth

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass; garnish with
a cherry. I'm not sure who developed the Blood and Sand, but I do
know where it got its name: from the 1922 film starring Rudolf
Valentino as a bullfighter. Scotch is a notoriously difficult spirit
to mix with, and simply reading the list of ingredients gives me a
toothache when I imagine the sweetness. Somehow though, completely
counter-intuitively, this drink works. The flavor complexity is like
that of a Floridita, where even seasoned cocktail aficionados may
have difficulty discerning the drink's ingredients. In the glass, the
blend of cherry brandy and vermouth form a perfect base for the
stubborn flavor of scotch, the scotch's aggressive smokiness keeps
the sweet flavors in line, while the orange juice soothes all the
various rough edges, making everything work together in the glass.
When mixing a Blood and Sand, use a blended scotch (Famous Grouse
works well for me), fresh-squeezed orange juice, and a decent cherry
  brandy, such as Cherry Heering.
