====================================================================
Hello Ruth!

-> -> HN> pleased the doc quite a bit. Just had
-> -> HN> a huge battery of blood work done and
-> -> HN> urine samples to check kindey function as
->
-> -> Hopefully all numbers will look good to you and the doctor. We went
for
-> -> years without eating a lot of potatoes but picked up the amount when
the
->
-> HN> Numbers DID look good, although he
->  HN> says I am slightly anemic (?!) as
->
-> Good on the numbers--was it fasting or not? Our new MD does non fasting
-> tests. And, I've been on iron for several years for slight anemia--just
-> can't get the reading high enough to be in the normal range.
->
I have not figured out the anemic
or hemoglobin problem yet...but I'm
no where near needing an iron supplement.
You do know that Tea inhibits the absorption
of Iron into your system don't you?

-> HN> my hemoglobin was at the low end of
-> HN> normal. As for Potatoes, I simply
->  HN> love em..chips, fries, baked, mashed
->  HN> scalloped, roasted..does not matter
->  HN> I love em...however I realize they
->  HN> Love ME a little TOO much...so I
-> HN> now have them rarely. Have not bought
-> HN> a bag of potatoes in ages!
->
-> I bought a bag today at Whole Foods Market. I generally buy russets but
-> will add in a sweet potato or two, sometimes Yukon gold or red. Sweets
-> are for Steve, the others go well in certain dishes.
->
Anne likes the sweet potatoes...and they
have lower carbs than regular.
->
-> -> HN> And I can be in real wilderness faster than you
->
-> -> Probably so, tho I've not looked at a map. There are a few desolare
-> -> places here in the state but the number is diminishing. OTOH, if we
were
-> -> in AZ, there are still a lot of places with nothing but cactus,
mesquite
-> -> and some nasty critters.
->
-> HN> I can be in total wild in less than
-> HN> an hour. Which can be a problem for
-> HN> many as they go off into the wild as
-> HN> if it were just a jaunt down the block
-> HN> and as ill prepared too!
->
-> Some folks wouldn't know how to prepare for anything like that. We've
-> started making sure we have a fleece throw or 2 and some munchies in the
-> car if we're traveling in winter. Other times of the year it's just
-> munchies (and drinks).
->
I used to keep a fanny pack and a
small backpack in the car at all
times. Fishing line, Butane lighter,
"space blanket", large black trashbags,
whistle, compass, vaseline, small first
aid kit, thread, cotton balls and bandages.
Also some hard candies, dried protein drinks
and some chocolate.
->
-> -> HN> As far as breads go, I have
-> ->  HN> whole wheat crumpets for tomorrow's
-> -> HN> breakfast (poached eggs on toasted
->
-> -> Sounds good; I've got some english muffins in the freezer I ought to
-> -> pull out for something similar. I made 2 beautiful looking loaves of
-> -> bread today using a cup of the leftover grain mix. Between those,
-> -> several kinds of crackers, other breads, pastas, etc, we've got a lot
-> -> of carbs in the house.
->
-> HN> Have you ever made bread with
-> HN> sprouting grain? I see it at the
->
-> Not tried it, I usually stick to my basic recipe for general eating. I
-> have done some experimenting but not too often. Just remembered--I was
-> at Whole Foods today and didn't look for red or black rice.
->
Next time perhaps!

-> HN> health food store quite often. High
-> HN> on the carbs though. I have found a new
-> HN> pasta that we really like; Dreamfields,
-> HN> it has a 65% lower glycemic index than
-> HN> regular and tastes better than whole
->  HN> wheat.
->
-> We like the whole wheat but some brands are better than others. We've
-> cut back on the amount we eat but not gone for a low carb specific one.
->
We like the whole wheat as well..but
we like this better.

-> -> HN> crumpets) and some high fiber english
-> ->  HN> muffins...and that's it, no crackers
-> -> HN> or bread at all. Do have cheerios
-> ->  HN> though!
->
->
-> Regular, multi grain or honey nut?
->
Regular has the lowest carb
count of the three mentioned.

->  HN> Everyone around here
-> HN> has green grass currently.
-> HN> Plenty of natural watering going
->  HN> on!
->
-> Not here; we're almost 2" behind the 30 year average expected rainfall
-> total for the year.
->
-> -> HN> Our grass (if it did not get regular
-> -> HN> watering) turns brown in the dry
-> ->  HN> summer heat.
->
-> -> Sounds like AZ but they get summer monsoons to help green it up. Most
of
-> -> the year, if not watered, the grass would be brown.
->
-> HN> Mostly because it should not
-> HN> be there in the first place!
-> HN> First time I went though AZ
->  HN> in the 50's I don't even
-> HN> remember seeing any grass.
->  HN> No..wait, I DO! It was at
-> HN> the Motel one night when we
->  HN> stopped...there was a strip of
-> HN> grass just in front of the
->  HN> office, with roses...
->
-> A lot of it has come in then from folks moving there and bringing in
-> their bit of previous life. We had it, and had to maintain it, living on
-> post. If we do resettle there, we're going to xeroscape.
->
Exactly!!! Why move to AZ in the first
place if you're going to try to turn
it into Ohio, or Penn, or wherever you
came from? Makes no sense to me...but
like you, if we had a place in AZ it would
be native plants only!

-> ->  HN> and I took Annie out for
-> ->  HN> a late lunch/early dinner when
-> ->  HN> she got home from treatment..only
-> -> HN> 13 more treatments to go! Less than
-> ->  HN> three weeks!!
->
-> -> Good to hear that the treatments are almost done! We went out last
night
-> -> to the prime rib place, had the left overs for supper with some
cleaning
-> -> out of odds & ends from the fridge to go with it.
->
-> HN> Hormone therapy will begin after
-> HN> radiation is done, but we have
-> HN> not even had a meeting on that
->  HN> regimen yet..
->
-> Hopefully no ill effects from that. I didn't need it but knew one lady
-> who did, and had problems with it. Then too, the way she's going, Anne
-> may have an easy time of it--you are good about keeping her nutrition up
-> which is half (or more) of the issue.
->
We've heard several "stories" about
folks who've had both No problems at all
and who've had extreme difficulty. I'm
hoping that we'll fall in the "no problems"
category, but we'll work through whatever
comes along. Today Anne is doing her best
to care for her burns. I'm doing my best to
keep her comfy while she does that.

Chat with you soon!
