We've got an Outback - which is much more convenient to me than the Texas
Roadhouse. I drive by it often on my way to somewhere else ... like the Texas
Roadhouse.  Bv)=

No Carrabba's ... so, I've not given them a whirl. We do have, currently, a
pretty good selection of Italian places ... of several regional cuisines,
ranging from Sicilian to Milanese and Venetian. My favourite was a Tuscan
oriented place called Bianco's. Sadly, it is no more. There is a place called
Tuscany - which is OK. But, not of the quality of Bianco's. They seem to have
their eye firmly on the bottom line rather than the food and service.  Bv(=

There are a number of steak joints - all but a couple chain locations. This is
a reversal of what obtained in my youth. Texas Roadhouse is the best of that
lot - by a long chalk. Outback is a distant second. Of the others, Longhorn,
Lone Star, and Alexander's (a grill it yourself place) are all Yuppie/Dink
watering holes with food pretty much an afterthought. Gallagher's remains in
business - although I don't know how - their parking lot usually has more staff
cars than customer cars in it. Both times I tried them out the food was
mediocre at best and the service was so-so.

There is, however, a non-chain place called "Fritz' Steak House" located in a
former Shoney's building. They open a 4 pee em and close at 1 ayem. Every time
I go by during opening hours the parking lot is crammed full of cars. Every
time I have eaten there the food has been excellent and the service
outstanding. And they are lower-priced than many of the chain places.  Bv)=

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Texas Roadhouse Legendary Sirloin Beef Tips
 Categories: Beef, Wine, Vegetables
      Yield: 1 serving

           Salt & pepper
           Garlic powder
      2 tb All-purpose flour
      1 tb olive oil
      4 oz (to 6 oz) sirloin steak; in
           - large dice
      1 sm Onion; diced
      2 tb Butter
      4 lg Mushrooms; sliced
    1/4 c  White wine
    1/2 c  Beef broth
      1 tb Cornstarch
           Seasoned rice

           Mashed potatoes; to serve

  Mix the salt, pepper, and garlic powder together and combine
  with the flour. Heat the oil in a skillet. Dredge the steak
  pieces with the flour mixture then saute the meat until it
  is medium-rare. Add the onions and cook until it is
  softened.

  Add the butter to the pan and then add the mushrooms. Cook
  until the mushrooms begin to color, then remove the meat,
  onions, and mushrooms to a platter and keep warm.

  Deglaze the skillet with the wine, making sure to loosen any
  browned bits, and let it reduce a little. Add the beef broth
  and bring to a boil, then return the reserved meat and
  vegetables back to the pan and simmer, covered, for about 1
  hour, or until the meat is tender.

  Mix the cornstarch with a little of the cooking liquid to
  make a paste and add it to the simmering broth. When the
  sauce is thickened, serve the tips with rice or mashed
  potatoes, and a vegetable of your choice.
