====================
Hi Michael,

RH> And our daughter Deborah found that reading the KJV Bible helped her
RH> understand Shakespear when most of her English class was struggling.

ML> KJV is as far as I am concerned the be all and end all version.
ML> It is in fact very Shakespearean, which is if anything points
 ML> in its favor.

But how many English teachers in today's public schools make their
students read Shakespear? I'm not even sure if Challenger does; I half
think so but can't say for sure. And with so many modern translations of
the Bible, the old KJV (which celebrated its 400th anniversary last
year) is almost unused. I traded mine for a New King James about 5 years
ago (weight factor) but still use it in study. Steve put an ESV study
Bible on my Nook; I'm still getting used to that compared to the NKJV.

ML> The important concepts probably could be got across in any case.
ML> "Give me your gold" is a phrase that has not changed much over a
 ML> millennium and half.
RH> Same with another key phrase--where are the facilities?--(but in other
 RH> words).

ML> I don't think so ... if only because for most of the history
ML> of England there weren't any facilities.

As long as there have been facilities of some sort then. (G) It is a
universal question, to which the answer is quite varied.

RH> One can only speculate. I don't see too many overweight
RH> doctors--haven't in years since Steve joined the Army. Even the
RH> specialists I've seen since he got out are normal weight. Other habits
RH> I don't know about but overeating doesn't appear common.

ML> I suppose the docs I remember tend to be from my generation
ML> and before: they were often pretty well fed.

I had some like that as a child, some before Steve went into the Army.
The PT standards of the Army pretty well ensured that their medical
corps were as fit as any other branch.

ML> Until recently, bbq was a relatively affordable indulgence.
RH> Poor man's way of disguising meat that may have been less than prime
 RH> cuts.

ML> True, but that was then and this is now. It feeds into our
ML> discussion of poor folks' foods that have become fashionable
ML> never to return to cheapness: from lobster to oysters to mussels
ML> and chicken wings to flank steak and brisket.

ML> Lately, it's become rich people's food, a combination of
ML> increased costs (labor, beef, wood) and fashion. I heard
RH> Faddish; it'll get back to its roots at some point.

ML> The cat is out of the bag.

Yes, but I'll never have the time/money to enjoy it the way you have,
thanks to Lillie. We will eat whatever the local version is, in a
restaurant, and make other versions at home. Tomorrow the crock pot is
going to cook some Boston butt Hawaiian style.

ML> Finnair - Copenhagen to Helsinki (someone in the scheduling
ML> department must have an odd sense of humor - "Where are you
ML> going?" "I'm flying to HEL on flight 666.").
RH> Cute! Somebody had a good sense of humor with that (and a good
 RH> understanding of English).

ML> English is a prerequisite for working in the airline
ML> industry, pretty much; and the Europeans are pretty
ML> darn good at their language skills. Especially the
ML> Finns, because nobody else takes the trouble to learn
 ML> their language.

Is it worse than any of the other Scandinavian languages? And, yes, I
know English is the language of airlines but to have the ability to
connect the thought lines does require a betterr than normal knowledge
if it's your 2nd landuage. I don't know how many Americans would
understand and appreciate the humor of it--probably a good number
wouldn't get it.

ML> Title: Joululimppa (Finnish Holiday Rye Bread)
 ML> Categories: Breads, Scandinavia, Finnish
 ML> Servings: 6

Looks good. I like rye bread from time to time. Still haven't found my
original recipe for it but it's probably around somewhere. I've not done
any clipping/sorting/discarding/etc in probably a month; I need to get
back into it so that it'll be (mostly) done by the time we pack out
again. It (the paper collection) is better than it was but I've still
got a good way to go before I have it all sorted and filed.

Catch you later,
Ruth

... It works! Now, if only I could remember what I did.
