Ärende: sour grapes?
====================
Hi Mike,

MR> the Summer the goal was to get the corn picked, sorted and processed
MR> and frozen within 1 hour of picking. This kept the corn very sweet and

RH> That is impressive. They must have had field not too far from the
RH> proccessing plant to have a goal like that. Since it does take time

MR> In this case, it was no problem. Avon is a corn town, even has an
MR> annual corn festival. Most farmers devote their farm or at least one
MR> field to Corn. Seems like even more now that new flex fuel cars can

OK, I wasn't really aware of that. We thought about buying a hybrid but
figured we could buy a whole lot of gas for the extra $$$ we'd be paying
for one. Steve was quite interested in the Prius at one time but I
never thought the one some friends of ours had was really that
comfortable. We ended up with a Focus instead--and kept it just long
enough to pay it off as it had some problems. Traded it on an Escape
that's doing quite well for us.

MR> use a corn based fuel. Sadly though, Bird Eye sold out to Kraft and I
MR> think they only Make Cool Whip their now. No fresh vegetable
 MR> processing at all.

Sigh! I'd rather have the fresh vegetables than the processed chemicals
of cool whip.

RH> dad used to not pick corn until the water was on the stove so I know
RH> how good fresh corn is. I was a bit disappointed the first time I

MR> I'll bet that was good. Never done that, but would love to just go out
MR> pick a few ears and cook em.

It was good; it spoiled me for corn. (G)

RH> finding out the corn waspicked that morning. (G)

MR> Some places emphasize this, some just let it roll. However You can
MR> tell when You eat it. If it is not fresh, even though they said it
MR> was. I won't buy it from there again.

We've not bought any from farm stands for years now. I don't even think
I saw it at the farmer's market here in town too much. It may have been
there, just not on our radar. I need to get up there this week and see
what's available now, probably the winter squashes among other things.

RH> got the aura of one thispast July after having just one and a quarter
RH> ears. So, much as we both like corn on the cob, I don't want to eat
RH> it in front of him.

 MR> Shame....

At least he gets the aura; I usually just get slammed with one.

RH> They seem to have lasted longer in western NY as opposed to the
RH> eastern part of the state. A lot of the eastern ones closed in the
 RH> 60s and 70s.

MR> I had a friend of mine, who was a Dairy Farmer here near Batavia. He
MR> and his partner ended up moving to Florida, They had 2500 head of
MR> cattle. He said NY was not conducive ( did not go into detail ) to
MR> making money in the Dairy business. As he got older, even in Florida,
MR> he realized that Dairy Farming was such a commitment that He sold his
MR> part of the business down there and came back up here. Now he works in

My in laws moved from western NY to Florida. Dad took early retirement
some years ago from Kodak. They had gone to Florida for a few weeks in
the winter for some years but made the move about 15 years ago. Now they
come up for north basically for the summer.

MR> the prison system. He said You work
MR> morning to night, and EVERYTHING when you are the owner is your
MR> responsibility. He was amazing, He said, he even performed surgery on
MR> his cows as You can't afford the vet bills for things like that. He

Some of my classmates were farm kids but I think most of them moved away
from the farm after high school. It's a job that can keep you busy all
day, every day, year round, especially if you have cows. We bought our
milk from a farmer in NC when we lived here in the late 70s/early 80s;
his wife worked for the Marine Corps because the farm didn't bring in
that much income. Good milk tho; I'd let the cream rise, skim it to
make butter or (if I had a good stock pile of that), ice cream. (G)

MR> loved the business, but said he figured he could work a whole lot
MR> less, get a check and a vacation and a retirement without all the
MR> hassle. I remember several dairy farms in Avon. I think Coynes, which
MR> was the biggest, is the only one left.

And they probably aren't getting rich quick.

RH> into Interstate 86 has been interesting to see over the years. That,
RH> and other major roadsthat have been built since we left the area have
RH> definately changed the ways we go, either to my parents or Steve's

MR> Yeah, things sure have changed. I liked going 17 for time saving sake,
MR> but like in the spring and the fall, I liked to go down farther, and
MR> don't quote me as I am horrible with streets, I think 441, then go
MR> right through the Hills all the way across the southern tier. It adds
MR> a good couple of hours to the trip, but love the ride. Then we would
 MR> come back 17 to 390.

I don't know too many roads out there. We took Route 19 to get to
Houghton from Brockport in July. We were going to cut off on 19A but
along detour starting in Warsaw put us beyond the cut off so we just
stayed on 19 once we got back on. No problem, saw some new territory.

RH> family. And yes, W-M is changing the buying patterns of the local
RH> people; I think mostly in those that sell groceries. Before W-M they
RH> had Ames or Big N or WT Grants or similar, and local grocery stores.

MR> Yup, many of those stores memories here now.

 > Next spring?

 MR> heheheh, we'll see.. ;-)

RH> Start the planning now; 6 months from now, sapping and syrup season
RH> will be just about, if not all, done.

MR> We'll see.. 8-) I have some other things going on that makes it a bit
MR> difficult to make any plans too much ahead of time. But will put it on
MR> my hope to list. It would be nice.

I know what you mean.

 MR> Pumpkin Cheesecake

Something to keep in mind for Steve's late October birthday. (G) He
usually gets a pumpkin roll.

Catch you later,
