No. That is an occasional luxury except for basic staples like flour

Yep. The unemployed and underemployed hunt, fish and pick berries.
The gainfully employed (mostly government workers, teachers and so
on) buy their fish and meat from the first group for cash. Roslind
bought 7-8 lb arctic char for $25 each (regular $35 but they like
her) when she was last in Kug. (She just got back from her Medical
Travel Companion trip to Edmonton last night and takes off again for
up there next Sat.)

If you had a choice between 8 lb of fresh sockeye salmon or one
sandwich made with Kraft single slices and a hard pink  tomato for
the same price which one would you pick?

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Salmon in Parchment
 Categories: Fish, Mushrooms, Salmon, Rice
      Yield: 4 servings

      1 tb + 1 tsp Butter
    1/2 c  Scallions; chopped
      1 c  Mushrooms; thinly sliced
      1 c  Red bell pepper; thinly
           -sliced
    1/4 ts Dried savory
    1/4 ts Dried marjoram
      4    Parchment paper (12" squares
           -or aluminum foil
  1 1/2 c  Barley; cooked
  1 1/2 c  Snow peas
    1/2 c  Wild rice; cooked
      4    Salmon fillets
    1/4 ts Salt

  In medium nonstick skillet, melt butter. Add scallions; cook,
  stirring frequently, 2 minutes. Add mushrooms, pepper, savory and
  marjoram; stir-fry 4 minutes, until just tender, set aside.

  Preheat oven to 400 F. Cut each parchment square into a large
  heart shape and place on work surface. In medium bowl, combine
  snow peas, barley and rice. Divide barley mixture equally over one
  half of each heart; place salmon on top of barley. Divide
  vegetables equally over the fish; sprinkle with salt.

  Fold parchment loosely to enclose filling. Starting at one end
  turn edges together in overlapping folds to make a tight seal.
  Place packets on baking sheet. Bake 12 minutes, until puffed.

  To serve, place packets on dinner plates; slit open carefully and
  fold top parchment back.
