-=> Quoting Dave Drum to Glen Jamieson <=-

JW> Lexi complained that she had never ever received a
JW> letter in her whole life. So I have been corresponding that way on
GJ> Did you use a printer
 JW> I did.
 GJ> Shame!
GJ> or do the write thing and use a fountain pen?
 JW> I should!
GJ> Try it, if you can remember how. Hopefully Lexi has learnt to read
GJ> cursive writing, and not just printing.

DD> I have a theory that "cursive" writing was developed in the days of
DD> quill pens so that one did not have to place the quill back on the page
DD> after each letter and get the flow of ink re-started ... with the
DD> attendant potential got blotches and splotches.

Originally all writing was printed in separate letters, as these were
derived from pictograms. They were easy enough to chip into stone or
clay tablets. The other early alternative was the brush, which also
worked best with short strokes. Your theory sounds quite likely, but
it is also possible that some monkish scribe using a quill just
thought it looked better if he ran one letter into another.

DD> Spencerian script is very elegant looking (except for all the "s"es
DD> looking like "f"s) but, hardly anyone writes "a neat hand" any longer.
DD> A rambling scrawl is more like it. For many people block printing is
DD> the preferred way to write things down - especially if they'd like to
DD> review what is written later. Bv)=

University study notes ruined any pretence at penmanship I may have
had. Nowadays students don't have to write at all, but they do need to
be able to read cursive writing in order to recognise, "Coca Cola",
written on a can or bottle. I have just finished looking through
newspapers to find if cursive writing is used for any other
advertisements, but without success. It would seem that the name Coca
Cola and a few other copyrighted names are the last remnants of the
art of penmanship.
