====================================================================
Hi Hap,

-> HN> We do not subscribe to the local
->  HN> paper any more either...over the

-> Steve would rather I read it on line but I like to curl up with the
-> print edition. What's not used in other ways goes into the recylcle bag

 HN> Most of the time I never
 HN> got around to reading the paper
 HN> unless it was a specific story.
 HN> I did get the coupons and grocery
 HN> specials all laid out.

We could get just the Sunday paper for coupons and Wednesday for grocery
ads but I like getting it every day. Helps keep a line of continuity in
the comics that run strips with story lines (vs one day one topic, next
day something different). Having a supply of newspaper on hand is good
also if Steve decides to take apart a computer on the dining table; it
doesn't get scratched if there's paper down to protect it.

-> HN> years it has become more and more a
-> HN> poorly executed badly written and
-> HN> seldom proof read rag. I get news

-> Sounds like somebody needs to step in and reform it. There's only the
-> one in the area tho? I would have thought your area would be large

 HN> It's mostly "computer run" now...and not
 HN> very well at that. Staff has been reduced
 HN> several times and there are few actual
 HN> workers there anymore. Tacoma has one

That's no way to run a newspaper! They need reporters who can go out and
cover events, large or small, then come back and write a coherent story
about it. TV coverage is not an adequate substitute.

 HN> daily paper, and three "freebees"; The
 HN> Weekly, the Volcano, and the "airlifter/
 HN> Ranger (a combined one for the AF and Army
 HN> respectively.)
 HN> Seattle has one daily, one Online
 HN> only daily (Seattle Times) and also
 HN> several "Freebees".

Get some good reporters in for the papers and they would do well. Can't
get rid of the military paper; the ones I read while Steve was active
duty always let me know what was going on, on post as the community
paper didn't cover that kind of thing.

-> HN> from TV, Radio, and the internet
->  HN> mostly. For Sports...read baseball,
->  HN> I go to a couple of blogs I like
-> HN> and the team's website as well.

-> As well as all kinds of food web sites that'll give you recipes and
-> interested in) this past year. Renewed "Cooking Light" and subscribed to
-> "Cooks Illustrated" but dropped Food Network magazine. Every time I went

 HN> We get Sunset magazine...I've dropped

I like Sunset, bought a copy last time I was in AZ for plane reading on
the trip home.

 HN> all three of my photo magazine subscriptions,
 HN> and when I feel the need for one I can buy
 HN> it at the local supermarket. or Barnes

We don't get to B&N very often. I figure I've got enough quilting
patterns to last me a good while--at least thru all the fabric I've got.

->  HN> a few others...I like spy novels.

-> I like a good action one--used to read Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan ones as

 HN> I liked Clancy's and read all of
 HN> them...when the first, Hunt for
 HN> Red October came out I was amazed
 HN> at some of the things he revealed
 HN> in the book...they were so classified
 HN> when I was in the navy that you were
 HN> not even allowed to talk about them
 HN> off base or off the boat!

I started reading him in Frankfurt, first an excerpt of Patriot Games,
then HFRO which lead to others. Was reading IIRC, Red Storm Rising one
day & had it with me when Steve took me to his work place one day. Left
it in the car, face down so the folks wouldn't think I was trying to
pick up military secrets from what I was reading. But, yes, I was amazed
at what he got away with putting in his books.

-> HN> Color theory can be fairly simple and
->  HN> straight forward...or very (VERY) complex.
-> HN> I'm often over my head in it and am
-> HN> working to understand it better.

-> I like working with color and fabric; that's why I do the creative end
-> of our machine embrodery work, I quilt, sew, etc.

 HN> It has the ability to give a great
 HN> amount of impact to a bit of art!

As well as a plate of food. Blue is not a color you see too often in
food; it just doesn't seem to play well with a lot of the other colors.
It's not as appealing as, the greens, yellows and reds of a lot of
fruits and vegetables. Blueberries are a dull blue so even against a
white background (white flour pancakes) they don't "zing".

-> -> Be glad you had the radio--tho it would have been hard to do a
 HN> cooking
-> -> demo on the order of Julia Child via radio.

-> HN> Oh we were VERY glad to have the
->  HN> radio...it was a major social tool
-> HN> in those days! A "date" was often
->  HN> going over to a girl's apartment and
-> HN> sitting around the living room listening
-> HN> to radio programs and "studying". There
-> HN> were also the Teen club dances on weekends,
-> HN> and the rather long bus rides from the main
-> HN> base to the various housing areas.
