-=> Quoting Jim Weller to Glen Jamieson <=-

ML> A new chile war has erupted - the Trinidad Scorpion Butch T,
ML> then the Texas Scorpenis, then the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion
ML> I don't know where the Australian version stands

JW> "A Trinidad Scorpion pepper grown in New South Wales, Australia, was
JW> tested and according to Guinness World Records as of 1 March 2011,
JW> is currently the hottest chile pepper grown. It measured 1,463,700
JW> SHU... Previously: an English grown Naga Jolikia (Bhut Jolokia),
 JW> Viper cultivar, 1,359,000 SHU."

Those are remarkably precise figures, considering that the Scoville
classification is based on a human perception of spicyness, and humans
vary considerably.

GJ> Is there any point in breeding such extreme chiles,
GJ> except for macho Texans to compete against each other?
JW> It seems that the English, Indians and now Australians are equally
JW> keen to compete for bragging rights.

It is interesting that no chilies have been included in the top 3 from
the Padang region of Sumatra, where the personal chile consumption is
probably the highest in the world.

GJ> An interesting item that Echo people could relate to appeared in a
 GJ> recent New Scientist.

GJ> "When instant cake mixes hit US shelves in the late 1940s, sales were
GJ> disappointing. Pioneering consumer psychologist Ernest Dichter went
GJ> into the nation's kitchens to investigate. His interviews with
GJ> housewives led him to a startling conclusion. The mixes made baking
GJ> too easy; cooks felt undervalued. On Dichter's recommendation the
GJ> next generation of mixes required the addition of a fresh egg. They
 GJ> sold like hot cakes."

JW> I was told a similar story by a marketing prof back in college.

A Marketing prof would have to be a good consumer psychologist.

JW> He declared that when cake mixes were first sold in Canada they
JW> merely required adding water and sold well everywhere but in Quebec.
JW> After some research the companies formulated a version for Quebec
JW> that required milk and an egg, which was successful. The moral was
JW> know your demographics. The French were more conservative and
JW> traditional, and women there are more concerned about (perceived)
JW> nutrition for their families and less concerned with convenience and
 JW> saving time.

That sounds like a similar base to the story. I suggest that the
Frankish ladies were more concerned about retaining a bit of
creativeness in their cooking than family nutrition - personal pride.

JW> Another pithy little quote of his: "The railways thought they were in
JW> the train business when they were really in the transportation
JW> business." Which is why they were blindsided first by highways,
JW> trucking and automobiles and then by airplanes. 30 years later a lot
JW> of businesses got killed by the internet because their business
JW> development and marketing geniuses missed that lecture. e.g. book
JW> stores, video rental stores and newspapers.

One could also include the Eastman Kodak film business.

The railways still remain the most economical way of moving large
quantities of stuff over land, so more railways are being built in
Western Australia to move iron ore. To further reduce costs, it is
proposed that the next generation of these 2 km long trains would be
run without drivers and be remotely controlled, like the aerial drones
in Afghanistan that blow up friend and foe fairly indiscriminately.

Spelling The word "chile" is both an adjective and a noun referring
to the plant and pod of a hot pepper, as in "chile pepper" (singular)
and "hot chilies" (plural). On the other hand, "chili" or "chilli" is
a stew-like mixture. "Chili powder" is a spice blend used to make
chili; it usually contains a combination of dried ground New Mexican,
Anaheim or Cayenne chile peppers, as well as garlic, cumin and other
  spices.
