============================
Hullo Glen!

-> -> HN> The original Japanese position was that the
-> -> HN> attack on Pearl Harbor was defensive in nature
->  ->
-> -> "Defensive"?? I can't see that even the Japanese could claim that
was
-> -> any more defensive than the repeated bombing of Northern Australia
-> -> shortly afterwards. Or perhaps they considered it to be a
-> -> "Pre-emptive strike", such as Israel is talking about, on Iran? If
it
->  -> was, it didn't work.
->  ->
-> HN> Of course it did not work. Mostly
-> HN> because history is written by the
-> HN> victors. But that was their position.
->
-> As far as it went, the attack on Pearl Harbor was very successful. It
-> was just the consequences that didn't turn out quite as the Japanese
-> military had planned. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's plane was shot down
-> on 18 April, 1943. Coincidentally a Filipino nephew of mine married
-> a charming young lady whose grandfather bore the Yamamoto name. He
-> had mysteriously appeared in the Philippines just after the war.
->
In fact the attack was much less than entirely
successful. Had they attacked the drydocks
and the oil depot it would have crippled
the Island's military position much more
completely. As it was the sunken and damaged
ships were for the most part repaired and
returned to service..and with plenty of
oil and munitions to supply them for
the retribution which was forthcoming.

-> -> Nothing can be 100% one or the other, but in aircraft, bombers are
-> -> primarily offensive, while fighters are primarily defensive.
->  ->
-> HN> If you go out looking for a fight
-> HN> that is defensive? Fighters did
-> HN> a lot more than just escort bombers
->  HN> y'know.
->
-> The bomber escorts were specialist long-range fighters. Most fighters
-> were primarily defensive, with the purpose of killing bombers and/or
-> their escorts.
->
Very much not correct my friend! Most
fighters were sent out on "hunter/killer"
missions to attack trains, bridges, munitions
depots and troops. The other primary function
was reconnaissance. Fighters in the pacific were
used for defense of a carrier, but were also
the offensive force used to sink enemy
carriers, shore emplacements, troops,
and more. Very much an offensive weapon.

-> -> -> HN> Every "weapon" is both defensive and
-> -> -> HN> offensive. If you had subs defending your
->  ->  ->  HN> coast in WWII you'd have used them "defensively".
-> -> -> All the attacks on Australia were by submarines and aircraft.
->
-> Australia did not have any submarines during WW2, but US, British and
-> Dutch craft were based at Fremantle and Brisbane. A pair of
-> Australian subs - HMAS AE1 and AE2, each 725 ton, with twin 8-cylinder
-> diesel engines, were built in England and delivered to Sydney in 1914.
-> At the time that was the longest transit voyage ever taken by a
-> submarine. AE1 was lost during a successful attack on the German base
-> at Rabaul - just "disappeared". AE2 later did service in the
-> Bosporus, was damaged, and later scuttled near there. There are moves
-> to recover it and return it to Australia.
->
That is how most submarines are lost.
without notice. If you are sunk while
submerged that is what happens..you
simply "disappear".

-> -> -> Interesting point; how does sub vs sub work?
-> -> How is that done while submerged? Like a duel, face to face, with
->  -> torpedoes at 10 km?
->  ->
-> HN> seldom "face to face" more like cat
-> HN> and mouse and the first one to HN> make a move loses.
->
-> I suppose revealing details of that sort of warfare is restricted. I
-> will just have to use my imagination.
->
There are no real "details": you try
to figure out where they are, while keeping
THEM from figuring out where YOU are...first
one that is really successful is the survivor.
More often it comes down to who's technology
is better at detecting and being undetectable!
chat with you soon!
