The Dollar stores around here carry both national brand and store brand merch.
The national brand stuff is pretty much at or below China-Mart pricing. I
*always* buy my laundry and dish-washing soap at either Dollar General or
Family Dollar - depending on who has the best price. Couple days ago I scored a
128 oz jug of Xtra laundry detergent for U$5. I won't even need to look at an
advert for laundry soap for the next six months.

My best friend buys his dog food (canned and dry) at the Dollar General near
his home. He has also recommended their canned soups to me. But, as I buy
vanishingly small amounts of canned soup ....

Of course, they also sell schlocky crap - the trick is being a selective
shopper by knowing which is a bargain and which is just cheap.

I have been favourably impressed by Canadian Tire stores the few times (several
years ago - when one didn't need a passport to get back into his own country) I
have visited them. Firestone and Western Auto here in the US tried that
concept. Firestone has gone to strictly tires and auto service. Western Auto
was acquired by Sears then sold off to Advance Auto Parts. So the Canadian Tire
model hasn't worked well in this country.

DD> Meijer which is a dual store concept have a store here. The grocery

DD> I've not noticed the service meat, deli, seafood, etc. suffering.

JW> Such a store needs two managers with two skill sets. I am not

Maybe you should "pull their coat" on that. Many firms take the attitude that
"retail is retail" and so long as the managers crack the whip on their minions
and keep up with the plan-o-grams that the marketroids at the home office
proclaim that the store(s) will make money.

Personally I think that the stores should be more personal and personable.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

Title: Fry Bread, My Personal Recipe (Baking Powder Recipe)
 Categories: Breads
      Yield: 4 Servings

  1 1/2 c Unbleached flour
      1 c Whole wheat flour
    1/2 c Cornmeal
      4 tb Baking powder
      2 tb Sugar
    1/4 ts Salt
      1 c Warm milk
           +=OR=+
      1 c Water
           Oil or shortening to fry

Fry bread is one of the most popular and widespread of the
modern Native American Indian foods. There are two main
types of this bread that are used for everything from a
quick snack to an everyday dinner bread. In the North and
East regions, a fried yeast bread is most popular, while
in the South and west regions a recipe utilizing baking
powder in lieu of yeast is the more common form. In Texas
the Alabama-Coushatta use the same recipe as the Navajo
  Fry Bread listed below.

In a mixing bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and
salt. Stir in milk and knead briefly with lightly oiled
hands until smooth. Rub the remainder of the one
tablespoon of oil over the dough. Cover and let sit in a
warm area for about 30 minutes. Either pat or roll out
enough dough to fit in the palm of your hand in a circle
about one quarter inch thick. Deep fry in a hot 350 degree
oil for about one minute per side or until golden brown.

  Makes 10-12 pieces.

Note: Dough can also be cut into triangles, squares or
perfect circles if rolled out and a cookie cutter like
device is used. Serve with honey, maple syrup, or as a
  bread for meals.
