Except that those particular Chinese guys can't even cook Chinese
food! I have only eaten there twice since the place changed hands
a few years ago and I won't be going back.

Are you referring to the Mongol invasion of Ghenis Khan that stopped
just short of Kiev or the fact that the old Russian Empire expanded
all the way to the Pacific coast and neighboured on Mongolia and
China?

People think of Canada as being English and French but we've had a
lot of immigration from all over. The Prairie provinces were opening
up to agriculture around the same time that there was massive
emigration from eastern Europe so there are areas that are
distinctly English minority. Fort Vermilion in Alberta is one of
them. The original settlers were French (fur traders, not farmers).
When the area was opened up to homesteaders a lot of Ukrainians and
Mennonites took advantage of the free land and showed up. The fourth
cultural group there was and is Cree Indian. Roslind's dad retired
from the Hudson's Bay company (he was one of the last real
fur traders as opposed to store keepers) and bought a farm there,
right next to the Cree reserve, partly because Roslind's mom is
Metis Cree and partly because the farm was cheaper being behind the
reservation and far from town. As Harry got along well with the Cree
(he spoke five Native languages) the family could go to town and to
school through rather than around the reservation. Roslind grew up
speaking French at home, English in school and picking up a good
deal of Cree, Ukrainian and that strange Mennonite version of
old fashioned German.

Polish Catholics observe Christmas Eve the same way too, but on Dec.
24 as they have the same calendar as us. My oldest granddaughter's
other grandfather is Russian and she loves celebrating Christmas and
New Years twice!

      Title: Ukrainian Cherry Blintzes
 Categories: Ukrainian, Pancakes, Fruit, Desserts, Jewish
      Yield: 10 Servings
 
           FOR BATTER:
  2 1/2 c  Flour
      4    Eggs, separated
    200 g  Butter
  3 1/2 c  Milk
    1/2 c  Sugar
           Salt
           FOR FILLING:
    1/2 kg Sour cherries
    1/2 c  Sugar
 
  To make the batter, mix egg yolks with sugar very thoroughly, pour in
  the milk, little by little, then add salt and melted butter.  Then
  add the flour and mix everything very well together, making sure
  there are no clumps.  Beat egg whites until foamy and fold them in
  the mixture. Cook blintzes in a hot buttered pan.  As soon as each
  one is light brown, turn it over for a few seconds and take it out.
  
  To make the filling: Pit the cherries, sprinkle them with sugar and
  let stand for about half an hour.  Pour off the juice and reserve it.
  Wrap the filling in blintzes and fry until they are ready.  Before
  serving, sprinkle them with confectioner's sugar and pour cherry
  juice over them.
