=================================
-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

ML> If the top of the fuselage were aluminized, that would kind of
 ML> defeat the purpose.
GJ> That depends on whether you wished to look down on Earth, God-like, or
GJ> to gaze upwards at the infinity of the Universe. In either case, you
GJ> would be well tanned and burnt, and a candidate for skin cancer, by
GJ> the end of a long international flight without protection.
ML> How much UV is reflected up from the earth? The other
 GJ> Practically none.

ML> Sort of what I thought. So if the top of the fuselage were
ML> aluminized, where would the UV come from?

I was unclear. I envisaged unaluminised top.

ML> They make airplane windshields out of it, been doing so
GJ> That is quite a heavy plastic to give the strength, and can still be
GJ> damaged by impact with a sufficiently heavy Canuk goose.

ML> Surely there have been stronger lighter plastics devised in
ML> the last 70 years. And anyhow, what kind of goose would have
ML> the speed and talent to fly sidewise into a fuselage with
ML> the momentum to cause damage? I figure it would be slipstreamed
 ML> aside and bye bye.

I was referring to your goose-resistant plastic windshields. The side
windows still have to be strong enough to resist air pressure
differential plus possible passenger-launched objects.

ML> could be constructed. And also, regarding fangling, a
ML> substantial portion of the Boeing 787 was made of plastic
 ML> reinforced by carbon fibers.
GJ> Yes, that has a very high strength, but unfortunately that comes from
GJ> the embedded carbon fibre filaments, which are black.
ML> It should be possible to strengthen with inclusions whose
ML> net effect is not black.

Unfortunately it seems that nothing has such a good weight/strength
ratio as carbon fibre, although linear-oriented glass fibre is good.

ML> Ramsay and Bourdain on the teev I had to keep the shades down.
GJ> I don't like arrogant, foul-mouthed Ramsay at all, but Bourdain has a
GJ> much more pleasant attitude to food, people and life in general.

ML> Ramsay amuses, though he keeps riding the same horse. The problem
ML> is that his objects of scorn are worthy of scorn. It would be
ML> interesting to see him light into one whose worthlessness is not
ML> so patent and whose ego is strong but not delusional. Bourdain,

Commercial TV here seems to concentrate on cooking programs which are
competitive and confrontational, but IMHO cooking should be fun, as
exemplified by "The Cook and the Chef" series with Maggie Beer, which
ran for years on the ABC, and was one of the most popular of all ABC.

ML> his attitude is not unlike ours, his idiocies are not unlike
ML> ours, and he's agreeably wealthy, which makes him the object of
ML> some envy. But watching several of his shows shows that he too
ML> keeps riding the same horse - there's a similar formulaic quality
ML> to Ramsay's and perhaps to other "reality-based" programs.

I have only seen a few of Bourdain's shows, but he seems to be quite a
likeable chap, who would not be out of place at an Echo picnic.

GJ> Queensland makes a lot of money selling coal to China. It has just
GJ> had a state election. The ruling Labor (leftish) Party was defeated
GJ> by the Liberal-National (rightish) Party by the biggest landslide ever
 GJ> in Australia's history, winning 78 seats to 8. I would expect a
GJ> shake-up in the public service to follow.

ML> Interesting - major governmental shakeups usually happen in
ML> bad times. What went wrong?

Although Premier Anna Bligh (a descendant of the famous Bounty
captain) earned a lot of credits from her decisive deployment of
resources during the severe floods and cyclone in Queensland a year
ago, there has been criticism of the system that didn't foresee or
plan sufficiently beforehand to prevent them. Also, her Labor
government welcomed in foreign companies to drill and develop the
dreaded Coal Seam Gas fields, spoiling good farming land.
