Hi Mike,
MR> It's funny You should say that, only because we have a rather large
MR> Flea Market in our area which does the same thing. It sets up on the
MR> weekend in the lot of one of the few remaining Drive-ins in the area.
RH> Hmmmm, do you happen to recall the drive ins' name? Might be one Steve
RH> went to with his family when he was a kid. Nearest one to my family
RH> was an hour away so I never had the experience.
MR> Well actually there are only a couple left. The one with the flea
MR> market is Avon. That is not too old. Probably 10-15 years. They
Only thing I associate with Avon is the (now departed) dairy with the
ice cream store. Oh, and an employee at the Ginnea nuclear plant outside
of Rochester trying to claim the picture of a sewer plant in their intro
presentation was the Avon plant. I was in a class at Houghton at the
time; we all recognised it as the Houghton plant. One of our professors
clinched the "discussion" with this guy by saying something about
"that's so & so's car in the picture". (G)
MR> actually built it after the Drive in heyday had passed. There was one
MR> in conesus, but
Too far east for Steve.
MR> that is gone, The restaurant that is there now, serves some of the
MR> best clam chowder that they claim the recipe to was found in the
MR> bushes under the screen of that drive in <grin>. Actually the owners
MR> were from
MR> Rochester and were already famous for their chowder. The other one in
So much for "finding" the recipe under bushes.
MR> the area which is a nice one, but about an hour or so from here is the
MR> Drive in in Perry NY. I think there is one out passed Albion too.
The Albion area one is the one Steve went to with his family; I asked
him earlier today. Does Perry still have the Champion sportswear
manufacturing plant/outlet store? The store was a good source of
inexpensive tee shirts for college kids; I got some there, as well as
some ski gloves.
MR> in > PA. If we had a basement or something like that, I'd make kraut.
MR> I would bet that is good. I get a taste of the homemade stuff once a
They also gave us some elk; I used some of it in my prize winning chili
at church in February. That and the goat meat I used blended well with
the beef, giving the chili an over all "now this is interesting" flavor
that won the judge's approval.
MR> year at the Polish Festival. Everything, even the sausage is homemade
MR> and it tastes nothing like the stuff bought in stores. A friend of
MR> mine does not like saur kraut, but can actually enjoy the home made
RH> Now that would really be good! Sausage, kraut, rye bread............
MR> You hit it right on the head. At the Festival You can get ala carte or
MR> a combo platter of Sausage Kraut and Rye Bread and Pierogis. Best
MR> pierogies I have ever eaten.
Sounds really good! I'd best be really hungry tho to polish off a
platter.
Nothing against Mrs. T's at the store,
MR> but.... 8-)
I bought some once; Steve wasn't too impressed so haven't bought them
again. If we could find a whole wheat version, he might like them
better.
MR> stuff. Much mellower. Same as horseradish. I never liked it until I
MR> had some of my Uncles home made
MR> horseradish prepared from horseradish made from his garden. That was
RH> Steve got some, when he was living at home, from a friend who lived on
RH> a farm. I understand it was a bit more than mild. (G)
MR> And another slight trick to mellowing it out, is a bit of cream in the
MR> recipe. I think that is also what makes Terris a tad better than most.
MR> That zing without burning Your tongue. A nice pleasant addition witout
MR> ruining the flavor of what You are eating.
MR> good! There is one brand here locally that is close, Called Terri's.
MR> Nice and mild, but
MR> still gives that zing...
RH> Does Wegman's carry it? We are going to try to get up to NY to visit
RH> family this summer & will be stopping (at least once, maybe more) at
RH> the Wegman's in Brockport.
MR> I get mine there when I can find it. So Being as Brockport is a big
MR> store You should be able to find it there.
OK, we'll check it out. See if they add anything else to it too; those
added things are usually the deal killer for us.
MR> > MR> 1 pound kluski-style noodles, cooked and drained
MR> Honestly Ruth, any kind of noodle will work just fine, it just depends
MR> on your preference of noodles. The Kluskies are to noodles like gnocci
RH> OK, then whole wheat noodles will work fine. Thank you for the
RH> suggestion.
MR> Should! Let me ask You this.. I am actually diabetic, so I don't eat
MR> the way I used to. I do miss pasta from time to time. I have not tried
MR> whole wheat pasta. Does it have an off taste? Any bitterness or
MR> anything to
MR> it? I have seen some lower carb whole grain noodles and wondered if
MR> they are good tasting. I am sensitive to pasta. Not rice, oddly, but
MR> pasta.
We've been eating whole wheat pasta for over 30 years now. Some has a
better flavor/texture than others; we did not like the Ezekiel 9:10 but
do like Bionnaire (think that's the name, in a green and orange-ish
package) and the Whole Foods 365 store label. We buy the 100% whole
wheat, some have other ingredients in them. Ideally you could get some
friends together for a pasta tasting--cook up several different brands
and different sauces, serve each separately. Try 2-3 elbows (or
equivalent) of each brand alone, then try different sauces with the
pastas you like the best (again, in small quantities). By the end of the
taste testing, you should have an idea of what ones you might want to
try in larger quantities. (You might want to try a couple of gluen free
ones in the mix.) Add in some salad & a bit of garlic bread and you've
had an enjoyable Italian flavored get together. Opinions will vary on
the pastas/sauces; that will make it more fun as the various ones are
touted or excoriated. (G)
MR> - Ukrainian Grated Potato Bake recipe
MR> A potato pudding that is tender and airy inside and crispy on the
MR> outside. Serve with sour cream, saute ed onions.
That does look good.
BTW, my parents bought the Bird's Eye green beans with spaezle a few
times. At the time I thought it was good--it is, if you've not either
made your own noodles or lived in Germany. I've done both, and would
rather have a whole wheat spaezle (as we make it) so I'm sort of
spoiled. Just my opinion on that one.
We went over to the outlet malls in Selma today--hit up a couple of
kitchenware stores. We mostly got little things but did get a new whip
for our Kitchen Aid. Got scrapers, a couple of palm peelers for fruits &
vegetables, some serving spoons, a bulb baster, glass measuring cup,
small microplane grater and other odds & ends. We also hit up a
Rockport/Reebock store where I got some walking shoes & sandels and
Steve got a polo shirt.

Catch you later,
Ruth
