===============
Hi Mike,

RH> Only thing I associate with Avon is the (now departed) dairy with the
RH> ice cream store. Oh, and an employee at the Ginnea nuclear plant

MR> Yeah Annis Dairy.. Sadly closed down a couple of years ago. And Oddly
MR> You mention it, but it was also about 2 months ago, they auctioned off
MR> everything on and in the property.. Another tradition bites the dust.

That was some good ice cream they had. But, I guess it'll have to be a
memory now and forever. We (Steve & I) stopped a few times just outside
of Mount Morris at the Loafin' Tree for root beer floats but I don't
recall seeing it the last couple of times we went thru the area. And, of
course some of the best pizzas I had in college were from Pontellos in
Geneseo.

MR> that is gone, The restaurant that is there now, serves some of the
MR> best clam chowder that they claim the recipe to was found in the
MR> bushes under the screen of that drive in <grin>. Actually the owners
 MR> were from
MR> Rochester and were already famous for their chowder. The other one in

RH> So much for "finding" the recipe under bushes.

MR> Yes, another way to talk lightly about something that was like a
MR> landmark to so many people. Cute Joke, but most who were familiar with
MR> the owner, knew he did not need a recipe from under the screen, his
MR> was great and pretty famous in Rochester. He sold the old Jays Diner
 MR> in
MR> Henrietta. He had to sell them that recipe too when he sold the diner.

No longer a family secret. There's one recipe Steve and I don't give
away but I don't know how many times I've made copies of my 100% whole
wheat bread and his mom's sauce & meat balls for give away.

RH> The Albion area one is the one Steve went to with his family; I asked

MR> That sounds about right, Ruth... I went by there last year on the way
MR> to Lewiston and it was still open as of last summer.

OK, we hope to be headed up to western NY at some point this summer.
It'll have to be before mid August but not sure exactly when.

RH> him earlier today. Does Perry still have the Champion sportswear
RH> manufacturing plant/outlet store? The store was a good source of

MR> I can't answer that exactly.. Champions Factory is gone from there
MR> (Perry). At least it's former spot. I think they moved out of state,

Are they still making things in the USA or are they farming it out
overseas like most everybody else?

MR> but don't know for sure. All the Champion Outlets in Rochester are
 MR> long
MR> gone. I used to love them when I was in High School. But I haven't
MR> seen them around for years and years.

We don't get up to that area too often so I wouldn't know if they were
still around. Probably could (in all my not so spare time) check the
internet but it's not worth the time/effort.

RH> inexpensive tee shirts for college kids; I got some there, as well as
 RH> some ski gloves.

MR> For sure! I think My Dad clothed me at that store for most part.
MR> Sweatshirts, jerseys, shorts, sneaks, all at a great price. I loved
 MR> it.

Part of the fun was not knowing what you would find printed on a shirt.

RH> They also gave us some elk; I used some of it in my prize winning
RH> chili at church in February. That and the goat meat I used blended well
RH> with the beef, giving the chili an over all "now this is interesting"
RH> flavor that won the judge's approval.

MR> That sounds like it would be good. I have not ever had elk or goat,
MR> but I was never one of those who was not willing to try.. I like meat
 MR> so it
 MR> sounds good.

It was good; I figured to do something that would be quite out of the
ordinary for this group---turned out I guess right in that the
something different was appreciated. Just enough of a non beef flavor to
make them noticeable without overpowering the beef I used. Also, just
enough heat without overwhelming everything, IOW, hot enough to enjoy
but not hot enough to blow the lights out.

RH> Sounds really good! I'd best be really hungry tho to polish off a
 RH> platter. ^^^^^^

MR> polish? Is that a play on words ;-) Polish off a Polish Platter.

T'wasn't intended that way originally but decided to keep it after I saw
what I'd written.

RH> Nothing against Mrs. T's at the store,
 MR> but.... 8-)

RH> I bought some once; Steve wasn't too impressed so haven't bought them
RH> again. If we could find a whole wheat version, he might like them
 RH> better.

MR> No, eating mrs t's is like eating mashed potatoes made from flakes
MR> rather than fresh. As for whole wheat, I dunno just how that changes
MR> texture and taste. Not sure this would work or not. My experience with
MR> whole wheat products is not much at all, Yet I hear it is good for a
MR> diabetic, so I have been curious, but hesitant to try.

Once you try the flavor of a good whole wheat pasta, you'll be hooked.
(G) Seriously, most people don't care for it but they've been raised on
the white mushy stuff and don't know what good pasta is. Give it a try,
but try several different brands to find what one you like the best.

MR> I get mine there when I can find it. So Being as Brockport is a big
MR> store You should be able to find it there.

RH> OK, we'll check it out. See if they add anything else to it too; those
RH> added things are usually the deal killer for us.

MR> IN this case, I believe all ingredients are natural. I think there is
MR> about 3 or 4 ingrdients. I don't have a Jar by me right now.

RH> We've been eating whole wheat pasta for over 30 years now. Some has a
RH> better flavor/texture than others; we did not like the Ezekiel 9:10

MR> See, there is my problem, You mention Ezekiel.. My Father Used to make
MR> me eat that as a kid sometimes (The Bread Only) and I did not care for
 MR> it at all..

Try some of the other brands; they are a lot better. And by making my
bread, I get the kinds we like. I did get a whole wheat sourdough
pumpernickel at the farmer's market yesterday that's been good eating as
well.

RH> wheat, some have other ingredients in them. Ideally you could get some
RH> friends together for a pasta tasting--cook up several different brands
RH> and different sauces, serve each separately. Try 2-3 elbows (or

 MR> That is an idea...

RH> BTW, my parents bought the Bird's Eye green beans with spaezle a few
RH> times. At the time I thought it was good--it is, if you've not either
RH> made your own noodles or lived in Germany. I've done both, and would
RH> rather have a whole wheat spaezle (as we make it) so I'm sort of
RH> spoiled. Just my opinion on that one.

MR> I can understand that for sure..

Amazing, how the tastes change once you've been exposed to the better
things, isn't it? (G)

 MR> Have a good One!

You too.

MR> Ham and Noodle Casserole - Good for leftover ham

Worth checking out; we baked a ham a couple of days ago. Aldi's house
brand--OK but not the greatest ham I've ever eaten.

Catch you later,
