Yes, Horatio.

I first heard of this kind of thing when someone started serving
Caribbean food at the old Green Street Grill in Cambridge: it was
mostly bar, except for this unexpected spicy treat in the back
room. Oh, not true, years before that, the Forest Cafe, also in
Cambridge, had parallel bar and dining areas, but nobody ate the
food, so the owner got this clever idea of turning the dining area
into a somewhat separate eatery called the Fondue Pot, which
specialized in prepackaged fondue with a splash of cheap booze for
restaurant prices. Not a day would pass, said some of the waitresses,
when someone wouldn't ask to gripe to the chef or would say something
along the lines of why, this is no better than Swiss Miss, which of
course was true, as the waitresses merely were dumping packs of
cheese cubes into the pots and stirring them up.

More recently, the custom has become fashionable, as with Jose Andres'
Minibar, which is a 6-seat world-renowned experimental cuisine
restaurant housed in one or another of his regular places.

Not to mention drugstores and 5-and-10s with lunch counters,
D'Angelo's with Steve's, KFC and Taco Whatever, and many such,
most of which I admit have not stood the test of time.

There, in Chandler, AZ, there's a bit of a tussle about which
direction the neighborhood is going to go. In the long run, I'm
sure cheap beats all, but for now, anyone's guess.

Corn Casserole
cat: side, starch
servings: 9 to 12

17 oz cn cream-style corn
11 oz cn whole kernel corn, drained
8 oz sour cream
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 c butter, melted and cooled
8 1/2 oz box corn muffin mix

Oven at 350F.

Combine first five ingredients, mixing well. Stir in corn muffin
mix. Pour into a greased 12 x 8 x 2" baking dish and bake for
45 min.
