Ärende: Ukrainian food
======================
-=> In a Subspace Msg From Jim Weller to Mike Roberts <=-

JW> Alberta 31%. There are also lots of them around Peace River where my
JW> son lives and, as I mentioned earlier, around Ft. Vermilion where
JW> my wife grew up. Today a lot of public schools there offer Ukrainian
JW> as a second language as well as French.

Wow! That would seem to be a tough one to learn, but I would pick it
over some of the common ones. I love the Slavic Church music. Would that
be close or similar? I love to listen to it's beauty, I just don't
understand it.

JW> The first Ukrainian families settled in southern Manitoba in the
JW> 1870s along with Mennonites and other Germans from the Russian Empire.
JW> Then there was a huge wave starting in 1891, mainly from the western
JW> part of the Ukraine (Galicia and Bukovyna) which was part of the
JW> Austro-Hungarian empire at the time. Ukrainians from Eastern
JW> Ukraine, which was then part of the Russian empire also came to
JW> Canada in smaller numbers. Later immigration came out of Poland and
 JW> Romania as borders shifted.

I love History stuff. I wonder what was going on there at that time that
fueled them all leaving the home land, I oughtta go brush up.

JW> Most Ukrainians who came to Canada from Galicia were Ukrainian
JW> Catholic and those from Bukovyna were Ukrainian Orthodox.
JW> The Orthodox group were strongly anti-Russian and set up their own
JW> independent church: the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada.

JW> And the Ukrainian Catholic church is a separate structure from the
 JW> Roman Church.

Just over the river (Genesee) here in Rochester, NY. There is an example
as to what You are saying. There must be some slight difference though.
There is a Ukrainian Catholic Church. It is "Catholic" to the extent it
under the Pope, but is not in the Rochester Catholic diocese. It has
it's own Bishop, not of the Roman Catholic Church, however it is a
uniate of the Roman Church. It's services are eastern rite as the
orthodox, but it is totally Catholic in other respects. I dunno, from
what I have seen it is more or less an orthodox church under Rome. Then
about a mile and a half down the road there is a Ukrainian Orthodox
Church. That is where I go to buy some of the good food at their food
sales. I have entered there church and did not appear to be strange to
them having been orthodox, but was escorted out rather quickly after a
few minutes as they just did not know me. They were totally Orthodox and
called themselves a Ukrainian Catholic Church ( according to their sign).
However we must really remember that Both churches consider themselves
Catholic, Just one of Eastern rite and one of Western rite, and it is sad
that the two churches who were once one, Split, not so much on beliefs,
though there are some including the Pope being the total head of the Church
and being infalable. But just the fact that the two sides were different due to
their geographic locales. East was different from west, but not so much
in beliefs. Kind of interesting, that we can get in good food, geography
and History in a Cooking echo. I love all three topics.

JW> They both use the Julian calendar to observe Christmas and Easter
JW> but of course follow the Gregorian calender in every day life.

Easter, now that is one thing they do disagree on. East and West don't
use either of the above calendars for determining the date of Easter,
but it does have something to do with the dates of passover and the full
moon and the equinox. Some years Easter is on the same date like last year,
this year they are a week apart.

Thanks for the history and geography lesson Jim.. I know I am probably
wierd, but I do like hearing about the Histories of other peoples. and
to be honest, I know Canada is just north of us, but we just don't learn
much about her, down here.

Have a good One!
Mike
