I have heard of that being done in Israel.  Apparently the rabbis are
not as fussy as some imams.  There was an incident that I heard of in
Fiji where an Australian contractor doing some work at an abattoir
walked across the yard where pigs had been held, and then across a
yard where cattle were waiting for Halal slaughter.  The local imam
saw that, and went quite ballistic!  It was not until profuse
apologies had been made, and the yard hosed down and cleaned
thoroughly that the imam calmed down.

Individual interpretations of the Q'ran and the Torah can vary a lot.
Manny in LA described himself as a "pork-eating Jew", and a Muslim
friend in Darwin is happy to just push bits of pork to the side of her
plate and eat the rest.

As the object of the old rules was to ensure safe eating, and they
were written before refrigeration and modern meat inspection came into
being, it could be hoped that they could now be modified, but that
could take a very long time, and possibly a new messiah to give the
appropriate instructions - via the Internet, of course.

I shall look into that.  As far as I know, they don't exist in
Australia.....  [Later] I did look at that site.  The Malaysian
manufacturer of that Halagel, used for pharmaceuticals as well as food
seems to be well established after 15 years in the business.  The
connection with condoms seemed a bit strange, but....

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05
 
      Title: Yogurt Pie
 Categories: Desserts, Pies, Newsgroups, May.rec
      Yield: 4 Servings
 
      2 c  Finely crumbled graham
           Crackers
      4 tb Butter
           ;softened
    1/4 c  Sugar
    3/4 tb Unflavored gelatin
      2    Egg yolks
           ;beaten into
    1/4 c  Milk
    1/2 lb Neufchatel cheese
    1/2 lb Cream cheese
      1 ts Vanilla
      1 ts Molasses
      1 tb Honey
      2 c  Plain yogurt
 
  Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Combine the cracker crumbs, butter, and
  sugar in a mixing bowl, blend well, and reserve 1/2 cup of the
  mixture. Press the remaining mixture firmly against the bottom and
  sides of a 10-inch pie pan, bake for 10 minutes, and let cool. Let
  gelatin soften momentarily in 1/4 cup of cold water, then dissolve,
  stirring, in the top of a double boiler over slowly boiling water,
  stirring, till mixture coats a spoon. Remove from the heat and let
  cool. Combine the two cheeses, vanilla, molasses, and honey in a
  large mixing bowl and cream with an electric mixer. Add 1 cup of the
  yogurt and continue to cream till smooth. Pour the cooled gelatin
  mixture over the cheese mixture, stirring steadily. Add the second
  cup of yogurt, mix well, and pour mixture into the prepared pie
  shell. Sprinkle the top with the reserved crumb mixture and chill pie
  for 1 hour before serving.
  
  Yield: 8 to 10 servings
