As I recall, your basement is a bit more open to the elements than ours.
We have had problems with mice from time to time.  When we notice them
(or see evidence of their presence) I put out snap traps baited with
peanut butter and a raisin.  After a few nights, no more snaps.

We've been pretty much free of them for a good while now.  We took to
only storing sealed jars in the open.  Cereal is kept in a closed
container.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05
 
      Title: Flank Steak Carlos
 Categories: Beef, Grill
      Yield: 4 Servings
 
MMMMM-------------------ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER------------------------
      1 lb Flank steak; trimmed of fat
      3 lg Garlic cloves
    1/2 ts Fresh basil
    1/2 ts Fresh oregano
    1/4 ts Paprika
    1/4 c  Lime juice; fresh, about
      2    - limes
      2 ts Olive oil
  1 1/2 ts Black pepper
    1/2 ts Salt
           Non stick olive oil spray
    1/2 lg Yellow bell peppers; cored
           -deseeded, sliced
    1/2 lg Red bell peppers; cored
           -seeded, sliced
      1 md Onions; peeled,sliced
           -divided use
    1/4 c  Wine, white; divided use
    1/2 lg Tomatoes; for garnish
           Fresh mint sprigs
 
  Flank Steak Carlos is marinated in an herb mixture and served with two
  pepper purees.
  
  Place steak in glass or ceramic dish.  In a small bowl, combine next 8
  ingredients; stir to blend and pour over beef. Cover and refrigerate 20
  minutes to 1 hour.

  Meanwhile, heat skillet until hot; lightly spray with non-stick
  olive-oil spray. Add yellow bell pepper and half of the onion. Cook
  over med-low heat , stirring occasionally, until very tender, about 5
  minutes.

  Stir in 2 TAB wine. Cook over low heat, stiring occasionally, for 4
  minutes.

  Place in blender or food processor fitted with the metal blade;
  process until smooth. Repeat process using red bell pepper.

  Cut tomato in half and  gently squeeze out seeds; dice and reserve for
  garnish.
  
  Remove beef from marinade and grill about 6" above med-hot coals 5
  minutes per side or until med-rare. Allow beef to rest 5 minutes. Cut
  diagonally into thin slices.
  
  Place 1 tb yellow pepper sauce and 1 tb red pepper sauce next to each
  other on dinner plate. Top sauce with sliced beef. Garnish with
  reserved diced tomato and sprigs of fresh basil. Serve immediately.
