Jim W. did an economic estimate on the meal and after
factoring in the wines decided it wasn't that bad of a
deal after all. I disagree with that assessment - it
was a bit of a ripoff.

I wonder about why the recommended intake of nutrients for
teenagers isn't broken out separately - it should be twice
that for adults! If official numbers had been available, I
bet your father would have adhered to them. Maybe one could
devise a formula where the caloric intake varies properly
as a function of age and maybe body weight.

Generosity being a thread that runs across cultures and
manifests itself in various ways. A guest at a Chinese
meal, it is said, should always leave a bit of food behind
on the plate at the end of the meal to reassure the host
that his generosity was such that the guest was stuffed
to the limit.

I've never had it either. My late friend Arnold, another wine
connoisseur a la Nicholas only more so, was reportedly raised
to ecstasies when his daughter got him a half bottle of the true
Essencia at auction for several hundred pounds back maybe 40 or
50 years ago. The stuff is rare.

On a somewhat lower level of delight -

Peppermint Mousse
cat: dessert
Serves: 6

1/4 c sugar
1 Tb cornstarch
1 lg egg
1/2 c lowfat milk
20  red starlight mint candies, crushed
2 c frozen lite whipped topping, thawed
1/3 c white chocolate chips, melted
Garnish - candy canes

Whisk sugar, cornstarch and egg in a saucepan. Slowly
whisk in milk, then mints. Bring to a boil, gently
stirring bottom of pan until mixture boils. Boil 2 min.
Pour into a bowl; cover surface directly with plastic
wrap. Refrigerate 1 hr or until cold. Fold in topping.

Meanwhile place a sheet of wax paper on a baking sheet.
Spoon chocolate into quart-size ziptop bag; cut 1/4" off
a corner and pipe decorations onto the wax paper.
Refrigerate or freeze until firm.

To serve: Spoon mousse into dessert glasses. Garnish
with chocolate decorations and candy canes.
